Statement on Texas’ Threat to Step Away from Helping Refugees in Need
Today the State of Texas threatened to exit the refugee resettlement program unless the federal government enacts a series of unnecessary conditions. It would be disappointing if this threat were more about political posturing than meeting our moral obligation to those in need.
We are currently in the midst of an international refugee crisis. Every minute, 24 persons, more than half of whom are children, are forced to flee their homes. The United States has the most stringent security protocols in the world for screening refugees. We are proud that Texas currently leads the nation in resettling refugees. How is it that now we would turn a blind eye to survivors of human trafficking, religious persecution, ethnic cleansing ... the very victims of the terrorism politicians now use as a wedge to drive us apart?
Hope Border Institute works closely with the faith community, community organizations and advocates in the great city of El Paso. People of faith and people of goodwill in our Texas community offer a daily witness to true Texan values -- compassion, welcoming the stranger, and offering help to families in need.
Just as El Pasoans everyday continue to receive unaccompanied minors and families fleeing violence, we know that Texas can do better. We applaud the leadership of the Catholic Church in Texas, which has committed to helping refugees regardless of today’s announcement. Texas can lead again . . . with compassion, not fear.
