Welcome Back ES  Minors and Friends of Environmental Studies!

The Bryn Mawr College Environmental Studies Program welcomes all ES Minors and Friends of the ES Program back to campus for an exciting year.

We met over 40 freshman students at the Academic Fair in August who expressed interest in Environmental Studies at Bryn Mawr.  We are hoping that many will sign up for the Intro to Environmental Studies course being taught in Spring 2017 by Don Barber and Michael Rock.  Here is a peek at what is in store:  This interdisciplinary introduction to Environmental Studies Minor examines the ideas, themes and methodologies of humanists, social scientists, and natural scientists in order to understand what they have to offer each other in the study of the environment, and how their inquiries can be strengthened when working in concert.

If you are interested in finding out more about the Environmental Studies Program and what you need to do to become a Minor....check out our webpage at www.brynmawr.edu/es, stop by the Environmental Studies Office at Park 133 or contact Bonnie Hallam, Administrative Assistant at bhallam@brynmawr.edu!

A number of Bryn Mawr Alums will be available for Mock Interviews.
One of our alumnae volunteers is Regina Kukola (BMC '10, Biology and Anthropology) who works as a Biologist for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.  Regina graduated from Bryn Mawr with an A.B. in Biology and Anthropology in 2010. After graduating, she served 10 months in the AmeriCorps NJ Watershed Ambassadors Program working to educate the public on watershed health and volunteer stream monitoring protocols.  After earning her M.S. in Biology in December 2013, Regina worked as an Environmental Scientist with the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, an Adjunct Instructor at Rowan University.

Abby Watson ('06, Geology and Environmental Science) works in government affairs and communications for Gamesa and is passionate about wind energy. Her bio is below.  Abby Watson manages all aspects of government and institutional relations for Gamesa in North America. Covering policy and regulatory issues in all fifty states and Canada, she spends a lot of time on the road and very little time at the office. After studying geology and environmental science at Bryn Mawr College for two years, family changes prompted her to shift gears and move directly into the workforce. For ten years, Abby has worked with nearly every type of renewable energy from nearly every perspective – development, construction, risk management, project management, manufacturing, sales, and policy.

Did you know?

Just last year alone, Bryn Mawr College composted 140 TONS of food scraps! Diverting this material from landfills avoided about 123 metric tons of CO2 pollution (which is equivalent to taking 300 cars off the road!) Well done, Mawrtyrs!

Kitchen Harvest will be sharing our compost with Linvilla Orchards, only about 16 miles away from campus.

Earth at the Brink

This academic year Bryn Mawr will invite filmmakers, writers, scholars, and scientists to campus to explore the impact of environmental change on health, wealth, and humanity. Join students, faculty, and staff as they investigate the impact of these themes on the quality of life in our local and global communities. Click on the picture above for more information.
