Welcome to the first edition of Rape Crisis South London e-newsletter where we aim to break the silence and create different conversations around violence against women and girls.

It is estimated that 85,000 women are raped every year in England and Wales, yet it is estimated that only 15% of women report their experiences to the police.

As a society we need to shift the attention to the men perpetrating these crimes, focusing on where the blame and responsibility for these heinous crimes lie. We need to continue to break the silence and look at creative ideas for prevention, providing specialist services, protection for women and children and bringing more perpetrators to justice.

Ending violence against women and girls is a societal issue - making it everyone’s responsibility and one that we invite men and women to engage with.

#BreakTheSilence
#BreakTheSilence
This summer we were proud to launch our #BreakTheSilence films featuring BAFTA winner Georgina Campbell. The short films show a survivor calling the National Rape Crisis Helpline, meeting with an Independent Sexual Violence Advocate (ISVA) at Rape Crisis South London, choosing to report to the police, and going to court to give evidence. An excellent resource for explaining the criminal justice system and the specialist support available, particularly for younger survivors, the films are available here.

Rape Crisis South London responds to Women and Equalities Committee report on sexual violence and harassment in schools

The recently published report from the Women and Equalities Committee has revealed a deeply concerning picture of young people's experiences of sexual violence and harassment in schools, highlighting how girls in particular experience disproportionate levels of verbal, non-verbal and physical sexual harassment, in school, in public and online, every day and often several times a day, mainly from men and boys they know. All young people have the right to be safe and treated equally and with respect - the need for compulsory sex and relationship education has never been more paramount and we invite you to show your support.
