Annual Day of Service

Sunday, October 9 | After Worship

We’ll be working on various projects around Avondale to show love and support to our neighbors.  Projects include: working in the Jones Valley garden at Avondale Elementary, knitting prayer scarves,
sorting crops of food, making “teacher happies” to be given to
our local elementary school teachers, etc.

We live in a culture today where there are many voices
constantly coming at us, where there a lot of things vying for our attention, where there are many things that distract us and
destroy our most important relationships.  This week, we focus on what it truly means to listen to people and to seek to understand them ...
this includes those we love and those we don't always want to love.
Join us at 11am this Sunday morning as our sermon series based on the poetry of Shel Silverstein continues with a poem titled Deaf Donald.

Our youth will be joining with the youth from Woodlawn, East Lake, and Highlands UMCs for a spiritual growth retreat October 14-16 known as Discovery Weekend.  The theme of the weekend, Agape, will help students think about what it means to love as Christ loved, fully giving of themselves in a selfless and sacrificial way.  Avondale UMC will serve as home for the students that weekend as they sleep and worship here along with other activities around town.  We need volunteers to help with:

  • Preparing & serving breakfast Sunday morning

  • Praying for one scheduled hour during the weekend in the prayer chapel at Avondale UMC

  • Serving as an overnight chaperone for the weekend

  • Serving as a small group leader throughout the weekend

  • Driving the students on Saturday to or from Birmingham-Southern College

If you can help in any way, please email Pastor Malinda (malinda@avonumc.net).  If you know a youth who would like to participate, have them register by clicking here.

Our 2nd Annual fundraiser was a HUGE success!!!  AvonFest 2016 raised ???? to support the shared ministry between Avondale and Canterbury UMCs that is Avondale Samaritan Place (ASP).

ASP welcomes people from all walks of life.  It supports two food co-ops where people work together to purchase and sort food that they
take home to their families.  It hosts weekly AA meetings, wellness Wednesday for our neighbors from Alethia House, monthly lunches for senior citizens to socialize and network, a place for community basketball teams to practice, and so much more.  If you want to get involved, please contact one of our ASP Board members (Alison Jenkins, Jill Wheeler, Ginger Branson or Malinda Weaver).

Please be in prayer for ...
Michael Lyda, Tricia Black, Ann Johnson, Susan Erwin, Susan Maddox, Tom & Freda Gann, Walter Key, Dot and Gaylon Hardin, Wade Skidmore, Aaron Baskerville, Betty Hutchins, Charlotte Harrell, Jeanette Gamble, Jackie Hogan, Chris Davis, Chris Fancher, Clarissa Hardnett and family, Lindsay Sullivan, Kerrie Welds, Mary Bryan, Chris Maddox, Cherry Bayliss, Pat Cates, Laverne Weinmann
