Leading their own movement

Some C4 & C5 members @Nevada State College tour: 1st monthly event of year led by C1 member & college student Leader David R. (bottom right)
The U.S. Department of Education's Fact Sheet "A College Degree: Surest Pathway to Expanded Opportunity, Success for American Students" released Friday affirms the work we do together. "Helping more students graduate with high-quality degrees can change lives and strengthen the economic security of our country... in addition to giving families a clear path to the middle class." However, only 1 in 10 students from low-income families graduate by 25. At LIT, we first empower access and then persistence and future leadership to mobilize the next-generation of leaders in this work. It's not easy: check out C1 member Linda's video reflections below. Nevertheless, we know-- with your support and belief-- it's possible, thank you for being part of our movement.
“I really understood what it’s like to come from a low-income neighborhood because I always heard growing up if  you worked hard you can do anything you want to do and it wasn’t until I came here that I realized that it’s not just about hard work anymore.” -Leader Linda, C1, University of Nevada, Reno freshman

Cohort 1 students matriculated to: UNR, UNLV & NSC
Community empowerment: LIT volunteers at the Ho'olaule'a Festival
Over 10,000 community service hours since 2012
Volunteer feature: Danielle Batin, CCSD Kindergarten Teacher

1. Why did you choose to become a new LIT volunteer this year?
I'm a first generation college graduate (undergrad: NC State, grad: UNLV & post-grad: NOVA Southeastern) I can relate to the trials and tribulations the students may face.

2. What are your impressions of the students after meeting them?
They remind me of myself at that age! Eager, curious and willing to learn.

3. What are your personal goals for being a new volunteer this school year?
I would like to help develop new networking and service opportunities. I would like to be an effective mentor that students can rely on.
