Pizza in the Park Thank YOU!

What a great turn-out for Pizza in the Park last Thursday! Thank you to the many, many teachers who cheerfully served up pizza all evening long!

We also had quite a large number of parent volunteers who showed up to make the event a success: Chong YuCherry Normington, Christina KattuahHeidi HannahAshley BarnesKyle PowellTiffany Bustos, and Elizabeth Golove
(I'm sure there were more that I've overlooked, so please accept my apologies if you volunteered but didn't make it onto this list.)

Most especially, thank you to Emily Burnham and Shannon Nixon, who organized and managed the entire event. Beautiful job, you two!

Of course, we can't forget our tireless Dad's Club who came first and left last, pulling both set-up and clean-up duty- particularly Paul Normington and Kevin Gauna who hauled all the tables back to the school at the end of the night. Thank you, as well, to PTA and MEF board members who manned the Spirit Wear and MEF tables all night. And last but not least, thank you to Kevin Gauna and Lloyd Lee-Lim of the Dad's Club who did an amazing job of managing the garbage. We created a single half-full garbage bag of landfill waste by the end of the night. That's pretty incredible.

6th Grade Science Camp

Tuesday September 27th - Friday September 30th.
Alliance Redwoods Conference Grounds

This fall, Madera sixth grade students will have the opportunity to attend Science Camp. Science Camp is an exciting 4 day, 3 night sleep-away camp where students learn about earth sciences, work as a team, strengthen friendships, and build self-confidence-- all in a unique outdoor setting, and has become a Madera tradition. Science camp offers our departing Madera students a chance to better prepare themselves for the next phase in their school career and with an experience they will long remember.

While at the camp, students will be attending a packed, educational, and fun schedule.  Activities may include classes in forest ecology, geology, streams, and forest animals, a ropes course, zip line, night hike, campfire skits, songs, and much more.

The entire cost of camp is approximately $250 per student. We want to make sure all students have the opportunity to attend, participation is strictly voluntary. The 6th Grade Activities Committee (parents) along with funding from the Madera Education Foundation have been working to raise funds to cover camp costs.

Playworks at Madera

Become a Lunchtime Supervisor and a Recess Rockstar

Perhaps you have heard your child come home recently and mentioned "Ro-Sham-Bo" or "Good Job, Nice Try" That's because we have a new program at Madera for recess, called Playworks which is changing our school culture by leveraging the power of safe, fun, and healthy play at school every day. We are lucky to have Playworks instructor, Coach Luis, come to Madera every month to help us create a place for every kid on the playground to feel included, be active, and build valuable social and emotional skills.

And we need more Yard Duty Supervisors to help us continue the good work Coach Luis has started! With hundreds of students out at recess at any time, everyone is leading play. Adults and Junior Coaches (student leaders) lead organized games, while all other students are welcome to play their own games that extend Playworks’ culture of inclusion, healthy play, and healthy communities.

We need YOU! Help us keep both playgrounds safe and fun, and volunteer during lunchtime. To learn more about how to be a recess rockstar lunchtime coach, read here.

Running Club Reminders

Running Club Starts at 8:00 a.m. M-F

We love seeing all of the students participate in Running Club! We've already ran a lot of miles together. Mileage is updated every weekend, and "Running Awards Tags" are delivered to participants on Monday mornings.

REMINDER! Parents, please DO NOT drop your child off any earlier than 8:00 for Running Club. The campus is technically closed until 8:20, unless your child participates in Running Club. There is no supervision on the playground, except for parent volunteers helping with Running Club. Students are not allowed to play on the play-structure or play with any equipment in the mornings. Please remind your student of these rules, and please don't abuse this program that we've worked so hard to build.

Takeaway, if they are on campus before 8:20, they need to get their badge and start running.
