A visit after half a century  

Summary: The President of Mongolia Ts. Elbegdorj has ended his official visit to Cuba and is on his way to the 71st Session of the UN General Assembly. This is Mongolia’s first official visit to Cuba in over 50 years. During his visit to Cuba, the President met with the Council of State and the President of the Council of State of Cuba Raul Castro to further improve political relations and to make significant progress in the agriculture and health sectors of Mongolia. Vaccinations against hepatitis a treatment for ulcers from diabetes will be introduced in Mongolia. Cuba manufactures Interferon, a drug used for hepatitis B and C, and Heberprot, a drug used during the last stage of diabetes, and exports to 38 countries. The Cuban Government scholarship program will be expanded to improve the relationship between the two countries.

ECONOMY

The People’s Republic of China has placed a ban on Mongolian meat exports

Summary: The People’s Republic of China’s Inspection and Quarantine Service has put an embargo on Mongolia meat export starting on September14th. There has been no official statement on the reason of the embargo, but recent disease outbreaks affecting livestock is considered the main reason for the ban. In the Khovd Province, Morbillivirus was reported on September 9th and 1,400 goats and 430 sheep showed symptoms of the disease and 27 goats and 9 sheep died. The World Organization of Animal Health reported that some animals have been exterminated. Since six Mongolian companies acquired a license to export frozen meat to the People’s Republic of China, there has been considerable development in meat production

MINING

Export of coal has increased by 65.7%   

Summary: As of August, coal exports passing through the Gashuunsuhait Port increased by 65.7% compared to the previous month. The increase in coal export is attributed to the launch of production at Erdenes TavanTolgoi’s Tsanhiin Zuun mine. TTJVCo LLC signed a contractor agreement with Tsanhiin Zuun mine and, in accordance with the contract, they receive 60% of the output in exchange for the production of coal. Erdenes Tavan Tolgoi signed a supply contract with Chalco LLC for 180 million USD in 2011, and the outstanding debt of 95 million USD is being repaid with the supply of coal. Since the launch of Tsanhuun Zuun mine, an estimated 15-20 million USD in debt has been paid. Currently, 6.6 million tons of coal passes through the Gashuunsuhait Port and analysts claim that 10 million tons of coal could be exported at the end of the year. The amount of coal exported last year was the first time in six years that less than 10 million tons of coal was exported.

Ceremony to honor the late Yu. Tsedenbal was held

Summary: Last Saturday marked the 100th anniversary of the death of Marshal Yu. Tsedenbal and a ceremony was held to honor the anniversary at his statue. Marshal Yu. Tsedenbal, a hero of the Mongolian People’s Republic worked for the Mongolian government for 44 year in various roles, including the the Head of State, Prime Minister, Member of the Political Bureau and the People‘s General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Mongolian People’s Revolutionary Party.
