Photoshop, InDesign and More with Kevin Slimp
October 28 | Burnsville
Register Now!
If you’ve attended one of Kevin’s workshops before, you know there is never a dull moment in the day! Join us to learn how you can work smarter in Photoshop and InDesign. Leave with tips and tricks you can put to use immediately.
The Workshop:
A full morning of Photo Editing, Color Correction & Learning to Use Even More Photoshop Tools
Kevin Slimp has been teaching photo editing since before most of us ever heard of Photoshop. Working on-site with hundreds of newspapers each year, his most requested training is by groups who want better photo reproduction on the page. Bring two pens. You will take that many notes.
Page Design and Ad Design Tips
It’s easy to get stuck in a design rut. That “deadline” thing always seems to get in the way of trying new things and developing new skills. In this session, Kevin will discuss simple things that can make a big difference in page and ad design.
One hour of Even More InDesign Tips
Kevin Slimp worked with InDesign before it even had a name. He was involved in the development of the application and trained a group of 98 newspaper designers in Phoenix how to use the application the first week it was on the market. He’s learned a lot in the 17 years since, and he’s going to share some tools that will increase your productivity and design.
The Speaker:
Kevin Slimp has been training newspapers in the latest technology for more than 20 years. As director of the internationally acclaimed University of Tennessee Institute of Newspaper Technology and the CEO of Newspaper Academy, he continues to stay on top of production technology and issues that effect newspapers. His work is regularly featured in industry-related publications throughout the world. Affectionately called “News Guru” by many in our industry, Kevin comes to us with an understanding of the industry paralleled by few. Don’t miss this chance to learn from the News Guru as he joins us in Minnesota October 28.
Early bird registration is only $75 and includes lunch. Register by October 14 to get the special rate!

Publishers: Statement of Ownership Due to USPS and MNA
The publisher of each publication sent Periodicals Class Mail, including foreign publications accepted at Periodicals rates, must file Form 3526 by Oct. 1, of each year at the original entry post office. If Oct. 1 falls on a Saturday, the post office would expect to receive it by close of business on Sept. 30.
The information provided on Form 3526 allows the U.S. Postal Service to determine whether the publication meets the standards of Periodicals mailing privileges. Newspapers with electronic subscriptions to claim will also use Form 3526.
The required information also must appear in an issue of the publication whose primary mailed distribution is produced:
- Not later than Oct. 10 for publications issued more frequently than weekly.
- Not later than Oct. 31 for publications issued weekly or less frequently, but more frequently than monthly.
- For all other publications, in the first issue whose primary mailed distribution is produced after Oct. 1.
All forms can be found on the USPS website: http://about.usps.com/forms/periodicals-forms.htm
**********
Please also send a copy of your 2016 Statement of Ownership to MNA. We use this information to keep your circulation number accurate in our newspaper directory.
Forward a copy by email to Cynthia: cynthia@mna.org or, fax to: 612-342-2958.

Smithsonian Museum Features Top Community Newspapers and their Families
WASHINGTON—Leading community newspapers are featured in a new virtual exhibition by the Smithsonian National Postal Museum. The exhibition, “America’s Mailing Industry,” was launched in a reception at the museum Sept. 13.
The National Newspaper Association developed the story of newspapers for the exhibit, working in conjunction with the NNA Foundation and the Smithsonian staff. Curators interviewed key publishers during the March 2015 NNA Leadership Summit, and developed the stories of their newspapers and their use of the mail. The exhibition is found here.
Other industries included are the direct mail, shipping, printing, software and nonprofit sectors, all of which rely upon the U.S. Postal Service and which collectively represent more than $1 trillion in economic activity each year.
Allen Kane, director of the museum, said: “America’s mailing industry is quite possibly the most successful government-private sector partnership in our nation’s history. We are excited to tell this story, as most people don’t even know the industry exists.” (Read More)

31st Annual Silha Lecture
October 3 | 7:30 PM
Cowles Auditorium, Humphrey School of Public Affairs
University of Minnesota East Bank
This event is free and open to the public; no reservations are required.
From "culturally offensive" Halloween costumes to protests over controversial speakers to "trigger warnings" in classrooms, debate over freedom of expression only seems new to America's college campuses. These and similar issues have roiled higher education for decades. Randall L. Kennedy, the Michael R. Klein Professor of Law at Harvard Law School, will revisit key disputes that are likely to continue to challenge First Amendment principles when he presents "The Politics and Law of the Culture Wars in American Higher Education, 1950-2020." Selected books authored by Professor Kennedy will be available for purchase at a book signing following the lecture.
Professor Kennedy attended Princeton and Yale Law School, and clerked for Judge J. Skelly Wright and Justice Thurgood Marshall. His most recent books are The Persistence of the Color Line: Racial Politics and the Obama Presidency and For Discrimination: Race, Affirmative Action, and the Law. He is a member of the American Law Institute, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the American Philosophical Society.

The GroundTruth Project: International Reporting in a Dangerous World
September 27 | 7:00 p.m. | Free
Today more than ever, truthful, in-depth reporting from international conflict zones that only on-the-ground journalists can provide is needed. This is exactly what The GroundTruth Project is doing. At the core of their work is the idea of “ground truth,” which simply means being on the ground to tell the story of social justice issues that matter in an increasingly interconnected world.
Charlie Sennott, Founder and Executive Director of The GroundTruth Project and award-winning foreign correspondent, will discuss how his organization is preparing the next generation of international journalists for the digital age, and will share his own experiences as a reporter on the front lines of wars and insurgencies in 15 countries, including the 2011 revolution in Cairo, Egypt and the Arab Spring.
Charles Sennott is an award-winning foreign correspondent, author, and editor with 30 years of experience. Sennott’s deep experience reporting internationally led him to launch The GroundTruth Project and to dedicate himself to training the next generation of international journalists for the digital age. Sennott is also the co-founder of GlobalPost, an acclaimed international news website. Previously, Sennott served as the Boston Globe’s Middle East Bureau Chief based in Jerusalem from 1997 to 2001 and as Europe Bureau Chief based in London from 2001 to 2005.
Produced in partnership with University of Minnesota School of Journalism and Mass Communication.

UMD Theatre presents "ONE RIVER"
September 29 - October 8
Marshall Performing Arts Center | Dudley Experimental Theatre
Evocative. Whimsical. Poetic. Dramatizing the journalism of the One River, Many Stories project, One River is an evocative exploration of place, examining what it means to live in the St. Louis River watershed. Director Tom Isbell shared what he wants to convey with this work, "I want to demonstrate that theatre is another way to tell stories. I want to support the One River, Many Stories initiative and encourage overlap of disciplines and different modes of storytelling. In the play itself, through the exploration of the St. Louis River and what it means to so many, I hope we can also come to find out what it is that each of us values, and, namely that value of Place."
