Inoculated Christianity.
I remember hearing a story about Billy Graham. He was returning to a particular town where he did an outreach several years earlier. At his first visit there were thousands of people who surrendered their lives to Jesus. Yet when he returned they had a hard job to find anyone in the area to steward the event. What could have happened to these people? Where were they? Where are they now?
I came across a lady in Launceston the other day, when we were giving out some information about our church. “We’ve just started a new Christian fellowship here” I informed her. She told me how she was a Christian and she had done an Alpha course. “Great” I said “where do you go to church?” She then proceeded to tell me how it wasn’t necessary to go to church to be a Christian, and gave me all sorts of excuses. I tried explaining that Jesus loves his church and is coming back for the pure spotless bride. It was quite obvious from her reaction that I wasn’t going to get anywhere. My thoughts were, “there’s another inoculated Christian.”
There is an argument that goes on in many church circles and that is, “Once saved, always saved.” As a minister of the gospel, I could get into very hot water by saying what I think but can this really be true? Again the truth is the truth whether we like it or not. We need to make up our own minds by looking at the evidence and coming to our own conclusion backed up by that evidence. We can all remember some of the lovely Bible stories that we read as children. Sadly for many children of tomorrow, they will have no knowledge of the Bible at all. I found it amazing when I became a Christian at the age of 32 that many of the Bible stories that I heard as a child came to life, but I still needed to work through them. I am amazed at the fact that I have been a Christian for some 24 years now and I am still learning! How have preachers managed to take the most inspired book ever written and often made it boring? One thing you can say about Jesus is that His life was not, for a moment, boring.
