Scary: Kinsler gets beaned

Games played September 18, 2016

Beaning leaves Kinsler with concussion symptoms

Tigers 2B Ian Kinsler was at-bat in the 3rd inning Sunday when a fastball tossed by Cleveland P Trevor Bauer struck him on the top of his helmet. Kinsler passed an initial concussion exam and stayed in the game until he was ejected in the 5th inning. By that point, he was showing concussion symptoms, according to MLB.com. Kinsler was the first of three Tigers batters hit by Bauer, who later apologized and said he "would never intentionally throw at someone's head." A day earlier, Kinsler hit a line drive that broke the hand of Cleveland P Carlos Carrasco.

Jewish players did not hit any home runs Sunday, so the season total remains at 111, two off the record set in 2012.

After hitting three home runs in two days, LF Ryan Braun sat out Milwaukee's 3-1 win over the Cubs.
The 2011 MVP is hitting .308 (10th best in the N.L.) with 30 HRs (7th/tied), 88 RBIs (11th/tied), 15 stolen bases, a .371 on-base percentage, .550 slugging percentage (7th/tied), and .921 OPS (8th).

Oakland RF Danny Valencia went 1-for-3 with two walks in a 5-2 win over Texas. He also tossed out Carlos Gomez, who was trying to score on a sacrifice fly in the 3rd inning. After losing the A's third-base job, Valencia has played right field, first base, and DH, and he has particularly shined in right field, recording five assists -- tied for 9th-best in the A.L. -- in just 57 total chances. All five assists have come since August 10, when he recorded two.

Entering the game as a pinch-hitter in the 6th inning, Los Angeles CF Joc Pederson drew a walk and later struck out in a 12-inning, 10-9 loss to Arizona. The Dodgers (84-65) lead the N.L. West by 5 games.

Toronto CF Kevin Pillar went 0-for-2 and walked in a 4-0 loss to the Angels. The Blue Jays (81-68) lead Detroit and Seattle by two games in the race for the A.L.'s second and final Wild Card spot.

Detroit 2B Ian Kinsler went 0-for-2, was hit by a pitch (see above), and was ejected in the 5th inning of a 9-5 win over Cleveland. Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said the ejection -- the 10th of Kinsler's career -- was the result of a "misunderstanding" with home-plate umpire Jordan Baker. The Tigers (79-70) are 2 games behind Toronto for the second and final A.L. Wild Card spot.

Reliever Richard Bleier did not play in the Yankees' 5-4 loss to Boston. New York (77-72) have lost five games in a row and are 4 games behind Toronto for the second and final A.L. Wild Card spot.

Reliever Scott Feldman did not play in Toronto's 4-0 loss to the Angels.

Houston 3B Alex Bregman is out with an injured hamstring. The Astros (78-71) lost to Seattle 7-3 and are 3 games behind Toronto for the second and final A.L. Wild Card spot.
