Every child ready for kindergarten!

Every child will be ready for kindergarten. This is one of five community impact goals the library is committed to. With your help, we can make it happen! Our library is partnering with the United Way of Greater Topeka to bring a unique early years book gifting program to Shawnee County called Dolly Parton Imagination Library.

The program mails a brand new, age-appropriate book every month to enrolled children from birth to age five, creating a home library of up to 60 books to read and share with parents. Imagination Library instills a love of books and reading from an early age. Studies show that participation in the program positively and significantly improves early childhood literacy.

For just $25 a year one child in Shawnee County can participate. We want all 12,519 children ages birth to five to take part in the program. Our goal is to raise $1 million so we can provide a sustainable program to help ensure a bright future for all Shawnee County children. Give the gift of reading today.

Library of the Year! Wow!

Have you heard? The Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library won 2016 Library of the Year! From more than 9,595 public libraries in the United State and Canada, we were selected #1 because we “demonstrate creativity, innovation, leadership and outstanding service to our community”. It is because of your support we have been able to make a difference in our community.

The prize for winning the Library Journal/Gale Cengage Learning Library of the Year award was $10,000. The library decided to contribute that money to the foundation to leverage gifts for our current project, Dolly Parton Imagination Library. For every donor dollar received between now and November 30th, a dollar of the prize money, up to $10,000, will go towards Imagination Library. You can double your impact. Contribute online today or mail your gift to The Library Foundation, 1515 SW 10th Ave, Topeka, KS  66604.  Read more...

Why we won
Why I give...

Over the years, Dr. Phillip and Betty Baker have realized what a good resource the library is. “We used the resources of the library and really liked the staff. We decided the library gave us so much, so we wanted to give back,” stated Dr. Baker in a recent interview. In 2007, the Baker’s made a gift providing them the naming opportunity of the library’s genealogy center. “The library needed support and the naming was extra. It was a win/win,” said Dr. Baker. The Dr. Phillip and Betty Baker Genealogy Center is located in the Topeka Room on the second floor of the library. The entire area is set aside as a space to focus on research.

In 2009, the Baker’s joined the foundation’s planned giving program, the Edward and Mary Wilder Society. They decided they wanted to leave an estate gift to support their named genealogy center. Their planned gift will help ensure the programs, resources and services of the library and specifically, the genealogy center, will be available for future generations. Read more...
