One Voice September Membership Meeting Recap

At the September membership meeting:
  • Chamber Initiative: Members voted on One Voice's support of the Austin Chamber of Commerce's Smart, Affordable, Austin Initiative which proposes such items as the Put People First campaign, creating jobs for middle income workers, and the Mobility Bond that John-Michael Cortez, Special Assistant to the Mayor, presented at a previous One Voice meeting. Attendees agreed that One Voice would support the initiative with the understanding that One Voice representatives will be able to participate on a working group and provide input as the platform evolves
  • Reframing Initiative plan: Members learned that Austin was chosen as a select city by the National Human Services Assembly to take part in the National Reframing Initiative to help reframe the language around health and human services. The One Voice Communications Committee is currently seeking interest from members to participate in the Reframing Initiative Leadership Group, which will meet via monthly learning lab conference calls, and possibly limited webinars and in-person meetings to help create materials for One Voice advocacy and templates that all organizations within One Voice can use. Click here to view the criteria to participate in the Reframing Initiative Leadership Group. If you are interested in participating, please email caity@onevoicecentraltx.orgThe deadline to sign up is noon on Wednesday, September 21st
  • Texas Legislature: Members broke out into affinity groups to discuss key issues, opportunities, and advocacy efforts for the upcoming Legislative Session. Please be reminded that you can find information about the Texas Legislature and statewide associations on our website by clicking here. Please also take the time to review the list of One Voice issue area experts that we share with legislators and send any additions or updates you have to caity@onevoicecentraltx.org.
  • Violence statement: Members were also reminded to sign on to the change.org campaign to seek change for a fully integrated, non-violent, and welcoming Austin. This was the statement written by One Voice to take a stand against recent violence. Don't forget to sign on today!
  • Healthcare: Following the meeting, Trey Halbert from CLS Partners shared an update and the next steps for the formation of a One Voice healthcare and ancillary benefits collaborative. The data and plan evaluation phase of the process will be complete by October 15th. Determining feasibility and next steps will be completed by October 31st. The ancillary benefits plans are ready to launch in early 2017 while the health benefits plan goal is to launch later in 2017. Click here for Trey Halbert's PowerPoint from the meeting.

The Reframing Human Services Network Newsletter Features One Voice's Reframing Work

The text below comes directly from the Reframing Human Services Network Newsletter.

Austin Flexes its Reframing Muscles

This week, we share the recent reframing efforts of One Voice Central Texas (click link to read the full newsletter), a coalition of nearly 100 health and human service organizations serving Austin and surrounding counties. In April of this year, Ilsa Flanagan conducted a day-long workshop on reframing human services for members and partners of the coalition. The participants enthusiastically embraced what they learned that day and immediately started thinking through how to apply the Building Well-Being Narrative to the coalition’s work.

Over the next year, One Voice Central Texas will work with the National Assembly to mobilize its members around the reframing research and shift the current narrative on human services from “aid to the needy” to making sure “everyone reaches their full potential.” One Voice Central Texas will lead efforts in Austin to build the capacity of its members to use the new frame for human services, ultimately encouraging more vibrant civic participation and deeper support for effective programs. The early results of One Voice Central Texas’ efforts are in. The coalition recently reframed its Who We Are statement and adopted new Vision, Mission, and Values statements that are framed using the Building Well-Being narrative.

Austin Travis County Integral Care Releases their 2017-2019 Strategic Plan

Austin Travis County Integral Care is beginning a new fiscal year and celebrating their 50th year of providing care in the community. They are also releasing their new strategic plan. The plan builds on the successes of recent years, such as their work providing integrated care in local school districts, collaboration with first responders to better address psychiatric crises, and diverting people from jails and emergency resources and helping them access community-based services. The foundational principles of operational excellence, innovation, and community leadership guide the new strategic plan and flow through each of the three goals.
