Advance Registration Deadline Extended to October 11
The 2016 ILA Annual Conference is less than two weeks away. Due to numerous requests, the advance registration deadline has been extended to Tuesday, October 11. Take advantage of this opportunity to avoid the on-site registration penalty and save!
If you would like to add any special events to your registration – such as the Youth Services Author Breakfast, DiversiTEA, or IACRL and Public Library Forum Luncheons – contact Tina Koleva at tina@ila.org. On-site registrations for special events will not be accepted, so reserve your space now.
Download the Conference Program Book and view the searchable online schedule to begin planning your conference. The mobile app will be available next week.
A new program has been added to the schedule on Wednesday, October 19, 9:00 a.m. – Take the Bite Out of Bed Bugs. As bed bugs become more common, it’s only a matter of time before your library encounters these pests. Be proactive: learn how to prepare before you find a bed bug. This panel of 3 library directors who “lived to tell” and Sue Hagberg, president of Canine Inspection & Detection Services, will share their experiences, bed bug identification training, sample actions plans and policies, treatment and maintenance options, and communication strategies.
The Exhibit Hall offers you the opportunity to explore and discuss with expert vendors the breadth and depth of new and favorite library products, services, books, online services, tools, and technologies. Make time to visit the conference exhibits on Wednesday, October 19, and Thursday, October 20. The Exhibit Hall will also feature the Illinois Author Showcase in Booth 613. Stop by and meet your new favorite author.

Proposed Dues Revision to be Presented at ILA Membership Meeting
One of the recent undertakings of the ILA Executive Board has been to examine association membership with the goal of determining ways to make it more accessible, more valuable, and more attractive to current and prospective members. A formal review of the dues structure had not been undertaken in more than 20 years, so it seemed more than time. Former ILA President Jeannie Dilger formed a task force in 2015 to survey both members and non-members and propose a revised dues structure to address the following issues:
- Keep initial membership rates as low as possible, i.e., be especially welcoming to new librarians
- Remain revenue neutral—the goal was not to increase revenue, but at the same time, not reduce overall income received from membership
- Reduce the number of membership categories from the current total of 47 to something more manageable and understandable
- Make dues as equitable as possible for both individuals and institutions
The task force brought their findings to the ILA Executive Board in April, received feedback, and submitted a revised proposal at the June executive board meeting, with a final vote taken in July to bring the proposal to the full membership meeting at ILA Annual Conference on October 19, 2016. According to ILA Bylaws, Article XI—Membership Dues, Section 1: “The categories of and dues for association personal and nonvoting members shall be determined by the Executive Board, subject to approval of two-thirds of personal members present and voting at the annual meeting, provided that written notice of proposed changes has been given to all members at least three weeks, but not more than sixty (60) days, in advance of the meeting.”
A complete listing of the proposed dues categories and additional information is available on the ILA website.
