Week # 3:  September 23, 2016

PRIDE IN OUR SCHOOL DAY - SEPT. 29TH

In keeping with our theme this year, 'Care for Our Common Home', our students will be tidying up our school grounds.  On Thursday, Sept. 29th, our students can wear casual clothes and we encourage them to bring gardening tools as they will be participating in some weeding projects with their class.  We also invite parents to join our students in 'Caring For Our Common Home'.  Please check with your child's teacher to confirm gardening times.
OTHER WAYS TO GIVE… FUNDRAISING
Did you know that non-cash items can also be donated to help raise funds for the We Do This Together Campaign?  During this year where Pope Francis asks us to Care For Our Common Home, OLA has partnered with the following companies to help recycle and raise funds for our school:

Biggar Bottle Recycling Depot Account
Consider bringing your recyclable bottles and cans to the Biggar Bottle Depot and donating the proceeds to OLA.  Simply let the attendant know the proceeds are for our school.  It’s as easy as that!  Address:  Biggar Bottle Depot, 2577 Kingsway Avenue, Port Coquitlam.

Library Books
Do you have lightly used children’s books your family has outgrown? Did you know that our OLA school library accepts children’s book donations? It’s a great way to get new life from your recyclables.  Simply bring in your lightly used children’s books and drop them off at the school office.  No board books please.

 Scrap Metal Account
Spring Cleaning?  Old bikes and freezers are only a few of the metal items the scrap metal company takes back.  Consider donating your scrap metal proceeds to our school.  Its as easy as dropping off your items and asking for the proceeds to go towards our school account.  Address:  Woori Metal Inc, #2-1961 McLean Ave, Port Coquitlam.

Boston Pizza - School Earnback Program
Here’s a simple and delicious way school families can help with school fundraising. New this year - OLA is enrolled with the Boston Pizza’s Earnback program.  There is a box in the school office that we collect Boston Pizza receipts from families who have dined at Boston Pizza.  Families can dine at ANY Boston Pizza location in Canada.  A portion of the total goes back to the school in cash. It can add up fast!!!

OLA BBQ THANK YOU NOTES:

Our school BBQ last Saturday was a great success!  It was wonderful to have so many families socializing together.  A big thank you to the Sherritt family for donating all the food; the Mulholland family for the decorations, face paint and music;  and to our fundraising committee and the 15 other families that volunteered their time and talents to make the event so enjoyable.

Cross Country Updates

Thank you to the parents and teachers who have been helping our intermediate cross country team to train on the trails.  We couldn’t do this without you and we really appreciate your involvement.  Information about our upcoming meet on Wednesday, October 5th was sent home this week with all cross country team members.   All students will travel to the meet on one of two school buses.  Parents are welcome to meet us there and then drive their children home.  There will be one bus returning from the meet to the school.  We anticipate that the meet will be over by 2:15 p.m. and we should be back at school around 3:15 p.m. Parents who pick their children up at the meet are welcome to leave after their child's race. Please return the permission slips by Wednesday, September 28th.
We do still need two parents to help us out at the cross country meet for participation hours.  This would mean a commitment from approximately 10:30 a.m. until 2:15 p.m. (or the end of the meet).  You would be welcome to come on the bus with us or take your own transportation.  At the meet you will be either marshalling the course at a specific location or bringing the athletes from the stands to the starting line on the field.  You will not necessarily be there to watch your own child finish the race, however you will be somewhere on the course to watch your child running by.  If you are interested and able to help, please email Mrs. Haywood at - monique.haywood@assumptionschool.com .

Please return the form to your child’s teacher as soon as possible.  Looking forward to a great year of full of beautiful singing!

Fine Arts Presentation: Monday, October 3rd at 1:30 pm in our gym.

Axis Theatre presents "Robinson Crusoe."   Parents are invited!

  **************************

"Assumption School Celebrates the Fine Arts Program" will start this year's presentations with an exciting theatre production from Axis Theatre.  "Robinson Crusoe" is a tale of survival and self-discovery retold with an imaginative physical theatre flair. Based on a true story, this original adaptation is about an English sailor shipwrecked on a remote island. Axis Theatre has performed for us in the past and we look forward to yet another excellent performance! Please plan to join us if you can.

For those of you new to our school, our  "Assumption School Celebrates the Fine Arts Program" collects a fee in order to provide exciting arts opportunities for our students throughout the school year.   More information will be coming home soon!
