Dear Parents and Caregivers

Peter Ackers

Term three is coming to an end and with that our seniors will soon be heading off on study leave to prepare for their IGCSE and AS/A level examinations. Our seniors should be looking at these holidays as an opportunity to get in some solid study. The next month or so can make a huge difference to their final grade. Parent – Teacher interviews for our Year 11 – 13 students this Thursday are an opportunity to pick up some last minute instructions from their teachers. Students should have a well mapped out study programme that ensures they are prepared as best they can be for their final exam. In Term 4 seniors (year 11’s after week 2) will not have to attend regular classes but we will be providing a supervised study room where students can come to school to study. Teachers will be rostered on and they will be available to help your child with their study in their particular subject. A schedule of teachers on study room duty will be available shortly.

John Key addressed parliament recently where he congratulated the New Zealand Olympic team on their record breaking medal haul at the Rio Games. In his address he talked about how athletes from a small country of 4.7 million can be world beaters if they set goals and work hard to attain them. As well as excelling in their events he said the way the athletes carried themselves with poise and dignity reflected incredibly well on New Zealand. He also used a saying often used that “New Zealand punches above its weight” on the international stage and that is something Kiwis take pride in.

His comments resonated with me when Huanui College athletes performed so well recently at the Secondary School basketball, Hockey and Netball tournaments and our juniors at the AIMS games in Cross Country and Hockey. It shows that athletes and teams from a small school in Whangarei can compete on a national level if they put in the hard work and compete with grit and determination. As a school we should take great pride in the performance of our teams and Huanui College most definitely punches above its weight. As our athletes in Rio, I am equally proud of Huanui College athletes on the way they conducted themselves while at their various tournaments. Our teams played hard but fair and their behaviour on and off the field/ court were impeccable and this reflected well not only on themselves but on their families and the school they attend. Our players did not do this on their own and they received great support from their coaches, managers, teachers and especially parents. I thank you for the time and effort you have put into our young people, you must be very proud of their performances.

I trust our seniors make the most of the time available before their exams and I wish everybody connected to the College a pleasant holiday break.

Peter Ackers – Principal

Quote of the Week:
“I've missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I've been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.” -  Michael Jordan

Shadows of Shoah

Another amazing experience at the Shadows of Shoah exhibition at The Hub at the Whangarei Town Basin. A big thank you to the moving talk given by John Kooperberg who gave the Year 8 students a brief explanation of the situation surrounding the Holocaust before entering the exhibition and then followed up on key ideas after seeing it.

It truly is an extraordinary display of stories of people who managed to survive what can only be described as one of the worst periods of history known to human kind. I was flooded with students questions when we returned to school, most absolutely astounded that something like this could happen to a group of people because of a belief they had and that Germany was in a similar position to NZ (in the way our government is structured) before 1939. A must see for all considering we are very lucky to have an exhibition like this on our doorstep created by a local photographer.

Oil Refinery Visit For IT Students

On Friday, 12 August, 10 Computer Science/IT students visited the refinery for the first time to learn about computer systems and how the processing of various derivatives of crude oil occurs. We had access to the control room and a simulator, which was fed live data from the refinery’s systems. We drove the school van, accompanied by Brian Dickson and were given a great tour of the facility. Thanks to all the staff at Marsden for enabling this.

Tongariro Hillary Outdoors 2016

On Sunday 14, August, 30 Year 10 students took a bus to the Tongariro Hillary Outdoors (OPC) Centre for one week of team building, skiing and sleeping in tents; some of them in the snow. A good time was had by all. The weather couldn’t have been more perfect with “Bluebird” days all week. A highlight of the trip, was taking a bus down and back and watching a variety of movies. Thanks to Gail and Michelle for pushing the idea. I would like to thank Gail Ahlers and Matt Hallberg for attending as extra assistants and getting the students up for their 06:00 duties.

Food Technology MKR Challenge

The Year 8 Food Tech group had their last Food Tech lesson for the year today and they competed in the class My Kitchen Rules Challenge! We had 5 groups compete where students had to come up with a dish of their choice which they could cook and serve within 1 hour. Our guest judges Matt Miller, Brad Edwards, James Martinac and Sarah Gover tasted all dishes and concluded that Sian Podesta on her own took out the top prize for today! Well done Sian with your Blackberry and Apple Pies and Whipped Cream Yum!

Spanish Piñatas

Piñatas are found at almost every Latin American celebration. At fiestas, the piñatas are hung in the air and children are blindfolded and take turns swinging at the piñatas. Eventually, the piñata is hit hard enough and it breaks releasing the candy and toys that it contained. And our kids have just done that! It has been such an amazing week, we have laughed so much and enjoyed the time together, the best part has been smacking the piñatas and eating the lollies!

Piñata making is a way to experience a bit of the Latin culture and learn about how Hispanics genuinely celebrate birthdays.

Robotics

On Tuesday 30 August, the Year 7 cohort had the chance to visit the Science-Maths exposition at Parua Bay School. Some students also helped out Mr. Lewis by showing what our robots could do with their senior students.

New Zealand's Next Top Engineering Scientist competition

Reka Norman, Lucy Johnston, Tobias de Ridder and Matthew Young use their skills in mathematics, physics, computing, logical thinking and writing to answer a problem revealed on the morning of the competition on Saturday 6 August for New Zealand’s Engineering Scientist competition at Huanui College. They worked from 9am to 6pm on the problem, “What is the fastest humanly possible time for the Olympic 100m freestyle event?”

SPORT

Huanui College attended the Upper North Island Secondary Schools Netball Tournament (aka UNISS) as part of Secondary Schools Tournament week, 4 – 8 September. 114 teams took part in this year’s tournament based in Papakura, Auckland.

Huanui College competed in the C Grade competition this year and at the start of play were ranked 28th out of 32 teams.

First round results: 2 wins and a loss, saw them go through to the top sixteen A section of C Grade playoffs. Having narrowly missed out on a place in the top 8 they found themselves playing off in the pool to determine their final ranking from 9th to 12th position. With 4 straight wins from 4 games Huanui College now ranks a very credible 9th in C grade for the 2017.

Emerina Marsh - Kiro is one of 10 talented players selected to the UNISS Tournament Team for 2016. Congratulations Emerina well done.

Our umpire, Kayla Sinclair, made good steady progress climbing the umpire rankings and having been assigned to umpire a top 16 C grade game. It was unfortunate for Kayla that injury got in the way of her possibly being assigned to umpire a finals game.

Aims Games

The AIMS Games are on this week in Tauranga. This is a national tournament for Intermediate School students. Huanui College is being represented through Cross Country and 6-Aside Hockey.
On Sunday our Huanui students gave it their all in the Cross Country competing against 740 runners from 96 schools!!
Our top results were:
  • Yr 8 Girls Indv Georgia McKay 16th, Tahlia Semenoff 22nd, Grace Gardner 52nd, Nellie Clark 95th, Skye Amsterdam 146th
  • Yr 8 Boys Indv Luka Clark 62nd, Jack Haverkort 119th
  • Yr7 boys Indv Will Trubshaw 31st
  • Yr7 Girls Indv Evie Potter 67th
  • Yr8 Girls Team 4th!! (One point off a bronze medal and two points off Silver!)
  • School Relay 17th place
Well done team! As you will see from the pictures, our Aims Games team are now famous thanks to the TV1 Breakfast show plus they also got to rub shoulders with some of our NZ Olympians and the famous Hip Hop World Champions The Bradas.

Last week we had a group of Y7 & 8 students head to Tauranga, to represent Huanui College at the Aims Games, to compete in the 6-aside mixed hockey.

After winning their 4 initial matches, they qualified 1st in their pool.
This placed them in the top 8 qualifying round with the following results: a win against St. Peter's Cambridge 5-2; quarterfinal loss against Whangarei Intermediate 5-3; next was a semifinal loss 7-4 which meant they played off for a final place of 7th or 8th against Highlands Intermediate - which was won 10-2. Well done team!!

Basketball

The Huanui College 1st Basketball team recently competed in the North Island Secondary School Single “A” basketball tournament in Tauranga. The team, captained by Head Prefect James Martinac, coached by Francis Heremaia and assisted by Evan Hamlet performed beyond expectations to make the final against Manukura School from Palmerston North. Along the way the team had 4 wins including an outstanding effort in the semi-final against a much bigger Kingsway School team from Auckland. The team competed strongly in a seesawing final where the lead changed several times, but eventually Manukua won by 7 points.

The team can reflect upon a very successful tournament and be proud of their second place ranking for the North Island. Thanks must go to the Coaches and parents that supported the team.
