Let's Make Sure That Every Day is Peace Day

Today we celebrate International Day of Peace, with the 2016 theme being "The Sustainable Development Goals: Building Blocks for Peace." In 2001, the United Nations General Assembly declared September 21 as the International Day of Peace, "a day of global ceasefire and non-violence, an invitation to all nations and people to honor a cessation of hostilities for the duration of the Day."

For those of us at the Metta Center (and the many of you reading this newsletter), every day is Peace Day, as we strive to cultivate peace and nonviolence in all aspects of our daily lives. International Day of Peace might inspire us to contemplate the "cessation of hostilities" that are present in our own lives, towards ourselves or those around us.

It's also a great day to take stock of the nonviolent movements working to create a sustainable and just world, like the protectors at Standing Rock who are working to stop the Dakota Access Pipeline, safeguard our water and keep fossil fuels in the ground. Plus there's Campaign Nonviolence's Week of Action, with more than 700 actions planned around the globe.

With gratitude for your efforts towards peace,
Stephanie Steiner, Director of Education
