KC Streetcar Update | September 2016

RIDE KC STREETCAR
This has been the summer of the streetcar. Sine May 6, more than 900,000 people have taken a trip on the KC Streetcar. Those trips included rides to Union Station and Crown Center, First Fridays, KC Irish Fest, Boulevardia & KC Riverfest, events at Sprint Center and the Midland Theater, the City Market , the Kansas City Power & Light District and the many restaurants and shops along the way.  Passengers included downtown residents and employees, tourists, conventioneers, families, singles and riders of all ages.

KC Streetcar ridership is calculated by Automated Passenger counters/sensors (APC) over each door of each streetcar. The data is downloaded daily, reviewed and finalized by a third-party for accuracy. Recently, the Ride KC team performed 30 manual passenger checks during the month of July to check for accuracy.  That activity revealed that the APC counts are within 1.4% accuracy and thus a reliable source of tracking ridership.

More ridership information is on our website.
KC STREETCAR PROJECT IS AWARD WINNING
The KC Streetcar project recently received two additional distinctions in the world of design, engineering and construction. In 2016, the KC Streetcar was honored with 5 awards ranging from excellence in sustainability, design, construction and community partnership.

Best Regional Project of the Year
The Kansas City Streetcar project is the proud recipient of the Best Regional Project in Transit by Engineering News-Record (ENR). The award recipients will be honored at the ENR Midwest Best Projects event Nov. 30 in Chicago. The award was submitted by HDR Engineering, Inc., who served as the project’s lead design firm. Stacy-Witbeck and Herzog Contractors, known as the KC Streetcar Constructors, was the joint venture responsible for building the infrastructure for the KC Streetcar.

Transportation Achievement Award
The Kansas City Streetcar project was also selected as the 2016 MOVITE Transportation Achievement Award Winner and will be honored at the annual meeting in October. MOVITE, or the Missouri Valley Section of the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE), is the international professional society for those engaged in the planning, design and operation of streets, highways and other transportation facilities.

Community Partner Award
On August 16, the Kansas City Streetcar Authority (KCSA) was honored at the Kansas City Area Transit Authority’s Rosa Parks SPIRIT Awards Ceremony, which celebrates individuals and organizations that, in the spirit of Civil Rights Leader Rosa Parks, are making a difference in metro Kansas City and in public transit.  The KCSA received the Community Partner Award for commitment to working collaboratively and innovatively to improve the overall public transportation experience and the quality of life in the Kansas City region.
EMOJI THE KC STREETCAR
The KC Streetcar Authority recently teamed up with Ride KC partners, KCATA and BikeWalk KC, to create a regional transit emoji. Emoji My City is the creative mind behind the emoji, which is accessible from the free Kansas City-Emoji My City app.

The
Kansas City emoji app launched in June 2016. Since then, the app has had over 88 million impressions and 848,000 interactions with the emoji keyboard.  Other KC icons are available on the app such as The Kemper Contemporary Art Museum, the Country Club Plaza, the City Market and Union Station.
