IntrovertTM

MSRP: $314.95
ORIGIN: Japan

The newly released Introvert is a unique accomplishment in folding knife design. The brainchild of a chemistry teacher and long-time Spyderco fanatic named Chris Knutson, it is the world’s first lock back flipper-opening folder. Its fascinating history and development, however, go much deeper than that.

Knutson began studying the Filipino martial arts at an early age. In addition to martial arts skills, his instructors also taught him an appreciation for high-quality knives—especially those from Spyderco. Based on that influence, he bought his first Spyderco knife—a Snap-It™—when he was only 12, and has been a loyal enthusiast ever since.

As a young adult, Knutson discovered the Spyderco S.P.O.T.™ (Self-Protection Options Tool)—a compact fixed-blade knife that featured a prominent index-finger hole in the forward portion of the handle. Pioneered by French custom knifemaker and martial artist Fred Perrin, this brilliantly simple feature locks the knife firmly into the user’s hand, providing extreme grip security and allowing full dexterity of the fingers without having to sheath the knife. Knutson was captivated by this design element and even more enthralled with Spyderco’s release of the Swick™—a very similar fixed-blade design produced in limited quantities for consumer-direct sales.

To Knutson, the Swick was the perfect knife. Unfortunately, his profession as a chemistry teacher did not allow him to carry a fixed-blade in a university environment, so he set about designing a folding version of the Swick. Using plastic, dowels, and his girlfriend’s broken hairpin as a spring, he created a working model of the design that he later shared with Spyderco’s founders at the Oregon Knife Show. They were intrigued by the uniquely different concept and ultimately decided to produce it as a factory knife. The Introvert was born.

The Introvert is an unorthodox folding knife that combines a flipper opener, a sturdy back lock mechanism, and generous index-finger hole to create a flipper-opening back lock folding knife. Its blade is precision machined from VG-10 stainless steel and features a sweeping PlainEdge™ cutting edge and a full-flat grind for outstanding edge geometry. In the open position, the blade’s Perrin-inspired index-finger hole anchors the knife into the user’s hand to ensure superior grip security. When the knife is closed, the leading edge of the hole also functions as a flipper, allowing the blade to be swiftly opened with a stroke of the index finger. The blade also includes a fully functional Trademark Round Hole™ that supports traditional thumb openings and proudly identifies it as a Spyderco product.

The handle is built on a framework of full stainless steel liners capped with textured G-10 scales. Its “dropped” angle complements the hand’s natural ergonomics, maximizes the knife’s cutting leverage, and shortens the opening arc of the blade for more rapid, positive deployment. The handle is also home to a unique variant of the traditional back lock mechanism that includes a machined slot in the lock bar to allow the blade’s flipper to pass through it.

To ensure convenient carry and immediate access, the Introvert includes a reversible deep-pocket wire clip that supports both left and right-side tip-up carry. Together with the knife’s other symmetrical features, it makes carry and operation of the Introvert completely ambidextrous.

An amazingly different design with a fascinating history, the Spyderco Introvert is an innovative, extremely functional folding knife that is well suited for both utility and defensive use. Despite its name, there’s no need to be shy…

A TIME OF REMEMBRANCE
This month Spyderco joined the rest of our nation in commemorating the 15th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Our permanent display of steel girders recovered from the ruins of the World Trade Center serves as a constant reminder of the lives that were lost that day and an enduring tribute to their memories. During the past few weeks, this very special display took on even greater significance, drawing the silent attention of many of our employees and visitors who used it as a touchstone to pay their respects. Spyderco is honored to maintain such a powerful and tangible symbol of the events that forever changed the character of our country. We are also proud to do our part to ensure that the lives lost and forever changed that day are never forgotten.

SNAPSHOT
SERVING THOSE WHO SERVE US

September was also a busy month for Spyderco’s sales and marketing team members, who represented our brand at two major military trade shows. The Maneuver Warfighter show was held at the Maneuver Center of Excellence, Ft. Benning, Georgia—one of the U.S. Army’s premier training facilities and home to the United States Army Armor School, United States Army Infantry School, the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation (formerly known as the School of the Americas), elements of the 75th Ranger Regiment, and many other additional units. Students of the center who attended the show included officers and enlisted personnel from all branches of the U.S. military and the forces of many allied countries.

The Modern Day Marine show, held at Quantico Marine Base near Washington, D.C. draws visitors from the Marine Corps and other U.S. military branches, as well as the FBI, DEA, and many other federal agencies.

These events are an excellent opportunity for Spyderco to support the military community, share our products with interested military and law enforcement personnel, and receive valuable feedback and suggestions from them based on their specific mission needs. This year, they also came at an auspicious time for us to commemorate the 20th anniversary of one of our most popular tactical folding knives—the Military™ Model.

Originally introduced in 1996, the Military Model was a literal answer to the question, “If your son was going into military service, what knife would you give him?” Its defining features included a broad, full-flat-ground blade, lightweight, open-backed handle construction, a user-friendly LinerLock mechanism, and an oversized Trademark Round Hole™ for swift, ambidextrous, one-handed opening—even while wearing gloves. Although optimized for use by military personnel, it found favor among all classes of knife users and quickly established itself as one of Spyderco’s most iconic designs.

Initial production of the Military featured ATS-34 blade steel and included both PlainEdge™ and fully serrated SpyderEdge™ configurations with either a satin or black-coated blade finish. In the late 1990’s, the blade steel was changed to CPM® 440V and both the design of the knife and its tip-down pocket clip were refined. In 2004, the blade steel was changed again to CPM S30V®, which remains the standard for most current versions of the knife.

In 2009, the standard G-10-handled versions of the Military Model were joined by one with titanium scales and a Reeve Integral Lock (R.I.L.) mechanism. A year later, a fluted titanium version with brilliantly colored scales was also introduced. Both of these are still available and now include stainless steel lock interfaces; however, the current fluted titanium version has a bright silver finish.

Earlier this year, the Military joined the elite ranks of Spyderco’s CPM S110V family of knives. This advanced blade steel offers extreme edge-holding and corrosion-resistance and is paired with the signature dark blue handle scales of this series.

As one of Spyderco’s most popular and recognizable patterns, the Military Model has also been a platform for many Sprint Runs, Exclusives, left-handed versions, and other highly collectible limited-edition versions. Its core qualities, however, always remained the same. A shining example of our commitment to producing reliable, high-performance knives that are worthy of your trust, the Military Model is an extraordinary design that—like our commitment to serving our nation’s men and women in uniform—continues to endure the test of time.

Its full-flat grind and partially serrated CombinationEdge™ cutting edge ensure superior cutting performance on all types of materials and the Trademark Round Hole™ in the blade allows quick one-handed opening with either hand.

The bright red handle of this knife is injection molded from ultra-lightweight fiberglass-reinforced nylon (FRN) and features Spyderco’s Bi-Directional Texturing™ pattern for a secure grip in even the most demanding conditions. It is home to a highly refined back lock mechanism that locks the blade securely open during use and a four-position pocket clip that supports right or left-side tip-up or tip-down carry. This feature, along with the back lock and Round Hole, makes every aspect of this knife’s carry and operation completely ambidextrous.
This extraordinary knife will be produced in limited quantities and will be available exclusively through Never Summer. Both it and the special limited-edition snowboard can be purchased separately or as a set.
