18 While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen:
for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.
2 Corinthians 4:18

<<Salutation>>

We are in an ALERT with Hurricane Matthew!  We appreciate your prayers for wisdom and safety.  Read more below.

A Look into our Lives

It’s always enjoyable for Les to compare agricultural systems and technologies, or the lack thereof, wherever we live.  Since his background was in the field of crop production as a retailer, and he worked very closely with growers during the planting and harvesting of crops.  It’s especially interesting to compare what he saw and experienced in Iowa with what we now see and experience in Haiti.  There is some mechanization, but not very much.  While we have 24 row, or more, planters in Iowa, and 12 row combines.  In Haiti we use a two row planter, (the only planter in our area) and harvesting is done by hand.  Once the planning is done, as a matter of fact, everything else is done by hand.  That means weeding, fertilizing, picking, and shelling.  See the picture to the left, of corn drying on the cob, that shares an aspect of Haitian agriculture. While the industrial revolution in the 1850’s radically impacted U.S. agriculture, Haiti has stayed the same with a high level of labor intensive farming.

       What will we see next?

Remember the old adage, A picture’s worth a thousand words?  We have lived in Haiti over five years, and almost a day doesn’t go by where we haven’t seen something that is either peculiar, sad, or just unbelievable.  As a matter of fact, we see so many things, that over time they start to get common or ordinary.  Often, we forget to take a picture because we see these things so often. Just the other day Les was coming back from the orphanage to our home, and he noticed people staring and shouting towards a specific direction.  When he looked over he saw a man in the back of a pickup holding a rope which was tied to the neck of a huge pig.  It was one of the biggest pigs he has seen in Haiti, and there were four women trying to lift this pig into the back of a small Isuzu pickup.  Haiti is full of small pickups that are used as taxi’s and the driver of this taxi was trying to help the ladies load the pig, but like most of the taxi’s the tail gate is welded shut.  So the women had to lift the pig above the tail gate.  Well, as you can imagine the pig wasn’t very cooperative, and Les finally drove away.  He said he wanted to take a picture, but if those women were trying to manhandle a huge pig, imagine what they would do to the foreigner that was taking unwanted photos…sorry, maybe next time.

          Hurricane Matthew:

Urgent prayer request regarding weather.  Although you may not likely have heard about hurricane Matthew, we are getting a hurricane that will eventually end up in the US.  We are preparing in every way possible. If you look at a map of Haiti, our location is just East of that peninsula or dip (Port Salute 30 minutes away) on the under far left leg of Haiti.  We are in the projectory path of this storm and are predicted 50-60% of its impact.  It is the strongest Atlantic hurricane since 2007.  Here is the link: Hurricane Matthew.  Please pray for safety.

Nudging's

To be continued next month.  We are taking necessary precautions for hurricane Matthew approaching.

One Starfish at a Time

          LORDINE:

We first wrote about Lordine in September of 2013.  While this is an update on a very special young lady, we also wanted to share a huge prayer request directly related to her.  Lordine is now the oldest girl at CCH.  She is 18 years of age, and as we shared a few years back, she is a great godly example for the younger girls.  She has demonstrated a heart for the Lord and a desire to serve and follow Jesus Christ.  But Lordine is in the midst of a battle.
Lordine comes from a family that has a strong multi-generational background in Voodoo and spiritual darkness.  Although she has been at the Center for over the last four years, this past year has been a real struggle for her.  We want to be candid; although it is difficult to completely understand just what all is going on, it is clear she is dealing with a predominantly spiritual battle.  Now we can imagine when we start mentioning a spiritual battle, some of you may start to “tune us out”.  For the most part, the spirituality aspect for a Christian in this day and age in the U.S. is very low-key.  However, it’s a very real part of our being as we are all made with a physical and spiritual component.  In a country like Haiti, where voodoo is rampant, the spiritual component is often more active, and the people and culture more readily recognize it and accept it as a way of life. In Lordine’s case, due to her family’s background and a number of things related to their voodoo worship, she has terrible dreams, and has started to struggle with poor health and erratic behavior.  We are not sharing this to cause people to get uncomfortable, but rather we are very concerned for Lordine, and we know the prayer of a righteous man availeth much. Would you please go to the Heavenly Father on Lordine’s behalf, praying for deliverance, safety, and protection!  Please also pray for wisdom for those who are working at solving this difficult mystery. If you have any additional questions regarding Lordine, please contact us, and thanks so much for your prayers.

James 1:27 Center Update

          Where has the time gone:

It’s hard to believe, but our babies are growing up fast. The James 1:27 Center was started back in January of 2014.  The whole concept of the James 1:27 Center was born after a time of discussion with Eddy and Djoune after they had visited the maternity ward in General Hospital in Les Cayes.  The conditions they described were appalling, and our eyes were opened to another sad reality of life in an extremely impoverished country.  It didn’t happen right away, but over the next few months, Les and Eddy would visit and discuss the concept of having a place of sanctuary for abandoned babies and widows.  GoServ was approached about collaborating and providing housing and resources to help make the project a reality.  In December of 2013, during our visit in the States, Laborers With Christ began to share the idea of having a place for unwanted babies and widows.  There was huge interest, and we received a large sum of money by an anonymous donor, and the dream became a reality. Rueben, named after Rueben in the Bible, the first of Jacob’s son, was the first child to arrive from the local hospital after being abandoned by the parents at the entrance of the hospital.

There have been as many as 22 babies, and six (6) widows on site at one time.  Recently a number of the original children have reached the age to begin to attend school. The girls have been relocated to the Consolation Center of Haiti (CCH), and the boys have been relocated to the Joshua House.  My how time flies!  What a joy it has been for us to watch and be involved with a number of willing hands and organizations over the years to emulate the heart of God by taking care of widows and orphans.  We have no doubt that if not for what God is doing at the James 1:27 Center, most, if not all, of the children there today would not be alive.  That may sound like an exaggeration, but one just needs to visit the local hospital to see the plight of the unwanted new born child in Haiti.  Ongoing support for the James 1:27 Center is needed.  Perhaps your church would consider adding this ministry to its church budget for next year?  Please pray for the James 1:27 Center!

Please visit our LWC blog for more on this.

      Intentional Marriage

September was an exciting month for us -- it marked two special milestones in our life. Two milestones that would only be possible from the direction and commitment to the Lord: our first year anniversary and the purchase of our first home. Two first's that are incredibly important, to us, and to those around us watching.
Ever since we started our relationship, the children (particularly the girls) at CCH have watched and witnessed our relationship blossom from boyfriend-girlfriend, engaged, and finally to marriage. As we've mentioned before, marriage in Haiti is often an economical decision versus a sacred commitment to faithfulness. Marriages are often built on foundations of safety and security in Haiti, rather than a union built on mutual faithfulness and love. Infidelity, abuse, and lust run rampant throughout these shaky marriages (as they do in the U.S.) which is why it was important for us to conduct our relationship in front of the kids, to show them that a Christ-centered, faithful, and loving relationship truly exists. Reaching the mark of our first year was a milestone for us and continues to add to the example of what an enduring, loving, Christ-centered marriage looks like. As many of the kids at the CCH are becoming teenagers we've devoted a lot of time towards addressing relationships, sexuality, and searching for a spouse. At our Sunday evening youth groups we would talk about such topics. This is an area where prayer and living examples of Christ-honoring marriages are truly valuable. When teams come, we invite them to introduce themselves and identify their spouse (if they are present) and how long they've been married. We've had couples visit who have been married 40+ years -- what an example!  Please pray for the maturing children at the Center, that they would commit their heart and soul to the Lord, and in doing so search out a God-honoring spouse.
Meanwhile, if you've read our blog recently--you would have seen our most recent post about the house we recently bought. In short, we purchased a home to provide us with a home-base when we return to the U.S. after being in Haiti. We still plan on returning to Haiti, although our original return date has been pushed back to November. We will be in Haiti for approximately a month, returning for Christmas. Check out the blog for more details on the house!

                                  GRAPES

The Queen of Fruit

These round little berries (yes, they are a kind of berry) are among the most well-studied fruits within the realm of functional, food-based medicine.  They are therapeutic in a number of ways. Grapes come in many colors, including green, red, black, yellow, pink, and purple. "White" grapes are actually green. They are generally considered a low GI (glycemic index) food ranging between 43-53 for those who are concerned with blood sugar issues.  Studies also connect grape intake to better blood sugar balance, better insulin regulation, and increased insulin sensitivity.  Both the skin and seed contain a treasure of powerful antioxidant compounds that science has linked to vibrant quality of life and longevity. Nearly every imbalance, ailment, and pathology afflicting modern man, in fact, is a potential target for the various nutritive substances found in grapes.

Many studies have shown its effectiveness at preventing and treating a wide range of age-related health conditions. Heart disease, Anti-Aging Marvel, Type-2 diabetes, cancer cardiovascular and cognitive decline.

Resveratrol in Grape Skins: An Anti-Aging Marvel

Anti-Aging:  Grape phytonutrients play a primary role in anti-aging properties especial our skin.  The best studied area regarding these anti-aging properties is the nutrient Resveratrol is a flavonoid with disinfecting properties.  Follow Genesis Health Blog and read more about this nutrient soon.

Grape seeds contain their own unique benefits that compliment Resveratrol.

  1. Support Oral health
  2. Improves Circulation - It effectively reduces the absorption of bad cholesterol (LDL) that obstructs the inflow of blood and increases the flood flow in a blood vessel with the ratio of good cholesterol (HDL).  This helps the increase the blood flow in a blood vessel and reduces the risk of heart attack and stroke.
  3. Normalizes blood sugar and helps prevent diabetes
  4. Reduces likelihood of hemorrhoids and varicose veins
  5. Strengthen bones and improves bone formulation
  6. Provides anti-cancer properties that help inhibit the growth of cancer cells such as in breast, stomach, colon, and leukemia.
  7. Reduces risk of stroke by relaxation of blood vessels.
  8. Boosts brain function and protects against cognitive conditions.  Fight memory loss and improve brain health with grapes. Our brain is hugely susceptible to the damaging effects of inflammation, free radicals and insulin resistance.

Unfortunately,  grapes that actually contain seeds are becoming increasingly harder to find in the produce aisle as many people prefer seedless varieties. If you can find them, they are worth their weight in “gold”.  They say oil is “black gold.  Well, Dark purple Grapes are purple gold.”  Grape seeds are naturally rich in oligomeric proanthocyanidin complexes (OPC), an antioxidant substance that is necessary for a strong metabolism.  These antioxidants have the ability to eradicate harmful free radicals from cells that can cause oxidative stress, leading to all kinds of chronic illnesses. So eating grapes is an excellent way to provide your body with the phytonutrients that can protect you.

All seeded or seedless, black or red grapes rule over white and green grapes when it comes to their levels of healthy nutrients.  The darker the grape is the stronger the nutrient.

  1. Carotene: High amounts of beta carotene
  2. You can also find vitamins A
  3. B-complex vitamins (such as pyridoxine, riboflavin, and thiamin)
  4. Vitamins: C, E and K Helps maintain health scalp and hair.
  5. Minerals: Magnesium, iron, copper and calcium
  6. Improve vision

Black Grapes:  Contain a substance called nocyanosis, that lends it its distinctive color and tonic, a medicinally invigorating stimulant properties as well!

Red Grapes:  These phyto-chemicals have been found to have an anti-allergic, anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, as well as anti-cancer activity.

  1. Anthocyanins: Flavonoids, imparting the pigment to red grapes and considered to be powerful antioxidant.
  2. Resveratrol: A polyphenol protecting against inflammatory problems and cancer

White/green Grapes

Even though they don’t have the anthocyanins found in red grapes, they have antioxidants and other nutrients.

  1. Catechins, a type of flavonoid tannin group of anti-oxidants, found in the white/green varieties have also shown to possess these health-protective functions. These are primarily found in Sultana raisins, from Thompson grapes, are especially concentrated in iron.
  2. Some medical experts think that white grapes are especially helpful for digestion. Botanists note that green grapes have been used as diet detoxifiers.

In place of candy or cookies, have a bowel of mixed colored grapes or freeze them for a cold refreshing snack.

NOTE:  Grapes are one of the most highly sprayed fruits and are completely contaminated with pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides and throw off the natural harmony off balance  Buying organic is always the best.
