RESOURCES AND DATABASES

ProQuest History Vault

On October 20th, UAB Libraries will present "Opening the Vault: the Black Freedom Struggle and the NAACP Papers," a reception introducing two of our newest acquisitions. Thanks in part to funding by President Ray Watts on behalf of the university, UAB Libraries was able to purchase two major databases filled with primary resources related to the NAACP and the history of the African American Civil Rights Movement. The event will take place in Mervyn H. Sterne Library (rooms 163, 174 and the Dean's Conference Room) from 5-7pm. Brief remarks begin at 5:30pm. If you have any questions or comments, please contact Brooke Becker at babecker@uab.edu.

ERIC

Education Resources Information Center, more commonly known as “ERIC”, sponsored by the Institute of Education Science of the United States Department of Education, is a digital library of research and information covering education topics for all grade levels. ERIC was founded in May 1964 and now indexes over 1.6 million journal articles, books, and reports, plus other education related materials. In 2014 the Institute of Education Services released a new user friendly platform that makes searching fun and easy. As a researcher, you may search using keywords or browse the thesaurus to explore index subject terms or descriptors used in identifying included content. ERIC, on the ies.ed.gov platform, links to full text when it is freely available or open access. From ERIC on this platform, to find a resource that is not linked, check the Library catalog and electronic journals list as the item may be available through another vendor electronically or in print. Should you choose to combine an ERIC search with other subject specific databases or wish to use your favorite database platform, ERIC is also available through EBSCOhost and ProQuest. As with other EBSCOhost and ProQuest databases, if full text is available a link will be provided. No matter which ERIC you chose to search, if full text is not available, UAB students, faculty and staff may request a copy through Interlibrary Loan.

NEWS

Open Access Week, October 24-30, 2016

What can researchers, librarians, students, and others do to increase access to research and scholarship? During Open Access Week, stakeholders are encouraged to take action in making their work more openly available. The “Open in Action” theme for OA Week 2016 will highlight people who have committed to making their work open and the benefits for those who do.

Open Access publications are those which are freely available on the Internet for users to read, download, print, and distribute with the consent of the author and without licensing restrictions.

One way faculty can take action on Open Access is by accepting invitations to referee a paper or serve on the editorial board for an OA journal. Universities and administrators can consider all peer-reviewed journals, including Open Access journals and traditional journals, in hiring, promotion, and tenure. See the Open Access Week website for other ways faculty and administrators can promote OA.

Benefits of Open Access include wider discovery of your scholarly communication, expanded availability of research to students and faculty, and increased community access to public-funded research.

Building Updates for UAB Libraries

LHL Renovation
Phase 1 of the LHL renovation to the first floor will be finished soon with crews moving to the front half of the floor. We hope to have new and improved study rooms open for reservation very soon. Thanks for your patience!

INTO Construction at Sterne
Construction of the INTO space on the Sterne 2nd floor is well underway. Areas being renovated are blocked and clearly marked but there is still some space on the 2nd floor available for work and study. We are still in the process of loading journal volumes from 1999 and back onto carts to be moved to EBSCO, but all 2000 and forward journal volumes are on the shelves, in order and accessible. If you have any issues or questions please ask at the desk.
