Word from the Campaign

Every month this space features the thoughts, reflections, and insights of an individual from the New Day Campaign community. This month's "Word from the Campaign" is written by a high school student in Baltimore who started a NAMI "Active Minds" chapter at her school.

Where is your sister? Shouldn’t she have graduated by now? Why isn’t she in school?" With gritted teeth, I was forced to continuously reply to these questions with something I hate…a lie. Ever since 6th grade I have had to lie to my closest friends and nearly everyone I knew. Whether it was where my sister was living for months at a time or why she was repeating a year of school, I always had to come up with some fake response and just hope my friends wouldn’t ask any further questions.  I realized how ridiculous it was that I had to hide my sister’s illness from everyone. She was already suffering; she didn’t need to be left on her own to do it. It was even worse when she was getting better; I couldn’t share the joy and hope with anyone, outside my immediate family. It took strength and courage for her to fight her illness, just like it does to fight anything, but she did not get the recognition that those fighting other battles do.  Even now when she’s living a “normal” life, no one can know what she went through because the judgment and stigma against it would bar her from her chance to live her “normal” life. Her success, as well as that of many other people, cannot be fully recognized without the work of the New Day Campaign and other organizations of its kind. Their work to spread mental illness awareness and fight the stigma is so important to changing everyone’s lives - the sick and everyone around them. This opportunity for everyone to learn more and open up to helping the people who are suffering can ultimately change entire communities. Especially in schools, people are only beginning to talk about mental health, and it is still hidden and treated as unimportant. The New Day Campaign’s work with schools and broader communities is crucial to the success of these individuals and to changing the negative association with them.

In Case You Missed It

Here we share information about new resources and recent developments related to mental illness and substance use, to help the New Day Campaign community get informed and stay connected.

#YouGoodMan

Rapper Kid Cudi's public statement about checking himself into treatment for depression and suicidal thoughts has inspired a call to action on the issue of mental health among black men. At the core of the issue is shattering the stigma that keeps black men from being honest and seeking help. That's where a new hashtag #YouGoodMan comes in.

Opiate overdose deaths in Maryland continue to climb In September, Maryland public health officials released the updated data on Drug and Alcohol-Related Intoxication Deaths in Maryland.  In the first six months of 2016, 920 people in Maryland died of opiate overdoses, compared to 601 in the same period for 2015. The dramatic spike surprised state officials and researchers and has been attributed largely to the highly-potent ingredient fentanyl that is increasingly mixed into heroin and cocaine. Read more (including the report) in coverage by The Washington Post and the Baltimore Sun.

Bruce Springsteen - Life with Depression

Bruce Springsteen's autobiography Born to Run was released on September 27. The book covers many aspects of Springsteen's life, including his lifelong struggle with depression. See the article in Vanity Fair or listen to this interview with The Boss on Fresh Air.
