Rei Hotoda, Conductor
Welcome to the 2016-17 season! Opening nights, education concerts, collaborating with soloists of tomorrow, community concerts and working with so many great artists sums up the busy start of my second season as the Utah Symphony Orchestra’s Associate Conductor. Looking ahead to October: a two-week chamber music tour and debut with the Toledo Symphony lies ahead.
Soloists of Tomorrow
USO’s 57th Annual Salute to Youth Concert
Working with young and talented musicians is probably one of my most favorite things about being a conductor. It is an exciting moment to watch someone take the stage at this age. There is so much hunger, passion and emotion--it really is a moving experience. On September 27, I led the USO’s 57th Annual Salute to Youth concert, featuring 9 young soloists, ages 10-18, performing incredible repertoire from Elgar's Cello Concerto to Sibelius' Violin Concerto. Then, following the concert, I met with the Big Brothers and Sisters of Utah organization, who, at my invitation, came out to support these musicians.
Utah Symphony in Cedar City
Tchaikovsky 5th Symphony

I sincerely love being out in the community. Working with the USO has given me ampul opportunities to do just that. On September 30, I will be conducting Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5 and collaborating with USO's Associate Concertmaster, Kathryn Eberle, on Ravel’ s Tzigane for Violin and Orchestra, as well as works by Debussy, Ravel and Sarasate at the Heritage Center Theater in Cedar City, UT.

Heroes, Legends and Myths
Exciting Debut with the Toledo Symphony

I am really looking forward to my guest conducting debut with the Toledo Symphony Orchestra on October 20, 2016 as I lead them for the first time in a program, entitled "Heroes, Legends and Myths," featuring works by Stravinsky, Verdi, Beethoven and many more.
Education Concerts at their Best
USO's first Education Concerts of the Season

To say that we have had a fantastic start to the season at Abravanel Hall is one thing, but when it is on the road and in response to our music education programs, it really takes it to a new level. This month I have already led the USO in eight education concerts: four in Orem, two in Bountiful and two in Spanish Fork, UT, with a repertoire that spans from Mozart to Ives. The response has been overwhelming! The participation and engagement level is off the charts!  Thank you to all of the students and teachers for your support.
What Lies Ahead
Tours and Debuts

In addition to my guest conducting debut with the Toledo Symphony on October 20, I will be leading members of the USO on a two-week education tour. We will be bringing a fantastic chamber music program to nearly ten cities across the state. The theme of this tour is “Let’s Dance!” and will include performances of works by Fall, Bach, Grieg, Ravel, Copland and Mendelssohn, among others.
