Beyond the Wild

Anisa Ryan grew up in McCall, ID, and has recently moved to Redmond, WA to finish her final year of high school and to play for the Washington Wild 19U Rep team.

Being raised in McCall for nearly 12 years, she noticed the social and academic struggles of foster care students in her school. These kids are not only moving homes very frequently, but also schools.

Anisa attended a semester at the Alzar School, which offers academic semesters for motivated high school sophomores and juniors to immerse students in a rigorous, challenging educational setting that emphasizes leadership training with the hopes to equip students with the background knowledge and skills to be effective leaders who will change the world.

Anisa came back to her home community of McCall with hopes that she could create a program to help these foster students with their personal and academic lives.

The Experts’ Edge

When Other Parents—Not Coaches—Are the Problem
-- by Michael Rand, Special to USA Hockey

When it comes to kids getting burned out on hockey, Dionne Koller has a different twist on an all-too-familiar story.

Her 14-year-old son recently skated away from the sport, declaring, “I’m not having fun anymore” and that hockey had become a “job.”

The problem, though, wasn’t coaches. It wasn’t other players. And it wasn’t his own parents.

Instead, it was the collective culture created by aggressive parents of other players that led him to decide a sport he had played since mites was no longer for him.

Koller, who didn’t want her son’s name used in case he decides someday to return to hockey, nevertheless lays out a cautionary tale as an example of another way in which overbearing adults can infringe on the happiness of kids playing a game.

Ask WWFHA

How do I Choose Equipment for my New Player?

For a parent of a new hockey player, entry into the sport can be an intimidating experience. And that feeling can start long before the first goal or even first skate blade hits the ice.

That’s because outfitting your youngster – 6U, 8U, whatever age they might be starting – requires equipment that’s specific to hockey. A basketball parent buys a pair of shoes and a ball, while a hockey parent is looking for head-to-toe gear.

Fortunately, Scott Aldrich – USA Hockey’s manager of hockey operations and longtime equipment man – provides some tips and demystifies the process.
