October Sunday Assembly!

Sunday, October 9th, 10:30AM
The Arts Center
300-G East Main St. Carrboro NC 27510

Our speaker for our October assembly will be Jennifer Lohmann, a librarian and award-winning romance author. Jennifer writes and speaks extensively about empowerment in the romance reader community, and she has an interesting and powerful message about how and why this special community supports and empowers women in ways you might not expect.. As always, we'll also share in conversation, song, and community-building activities. Please RSVP on Meetup!

Programming note: Parents will need to remain with their children during assemblies for the rest of 2016. For the next couple of months we'll be doing something a little different for the kid's activities during the assembly. We will have the full room open (no barrier wall) and the back of the room will have tables, chairs, and a variety of quiet activities appropriate for many ages. Little assembliers will need to be supervised by a parent or guardian while enjoying this activity area. Thanks for understanding!

Domestic Violence Awareness Month Donation Drive

Since October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we're going to run a donation drive for the Durham Crisis Response Center. The DCRC is a non-profit organization that provides shelter, legal support, counseling, and many other services for victims of domestic and sexual violence. In addition to financial donations, they accept many types of household items for stocking their shelter, including non-perishable food items, diapers, cleaning supplies, and feminine hygiene products. A complete list can be found here. We'll be collecting these supplies at September and October's assemblies. You can also donate a used cellphone to the Compass Center in Chapel Hill, or by dropping one off at any of these locations in Chapel Hill. Cell phones that can call 911 are vitally important tools for people who are victims of domestic violence.

Pride Festival Last Weekend

What can we say about last weekend's Pride Festival? The turnout was amazing, the energy was infectious, and the weather was glorious (maybe a little sunnier than last year). So many people were gathered to celebrate the one life we know we have, and to allow people to be themselves in an open and accepting environment. Our booth teams met a ton of new and interesting people, some of whom signed up to receive this newsletter.
To all our new potential future assemblyers: Welcome! This is our biweekly newsletter - it has information about our upcoming events, as well as recaps of anything you may have missed. It's one of the ways we keep in touch in between assemblies and continue cultivating our community. You can find links to the rest of our social media presence at the bottom of this email.

Songs for October

Click here for a Youtube playlist of all the songs we'll be singing in October. Every month, we try to fit the songs to the theme and the speaker as much as possible. Since our theme this month is Love and Women's Empowerment, we're singing songs about self-actualization and empowerment, all written by women. If you have ideas about songs for a future theme, let us know!
  • Unwritten - Natasha Bedingfield
  • Brave - Sara Bareilles
  • Beautiful - Christina Aguilera
  • I Will Survive - Gloria Gaynor

Open Board Meeting Minutes

We had our quarterly open board meeting on September 16th. Minutes from the meeting are available from our website. Anyone is welcome to come to our board meetings to get involved, to ask questions, or to make suggestions. Stay tuned for the next one!

Events for October/November

  • Saturday, October 15th - Food Bank volunteer day (ages 12+) This will involve doing some light manual labor, usually sorting food into categories or bagging up donations to be distributed. It's a great cause, and a good way to start off your weekend!
  • Another Board Game day coming soon!
  • We'll be restarting our hiking group once it's finally not hot anymore!

A sneak peak at upcoming assemblies!

  • November 13th - Rob Wall,  director of the North Carolina Commission of Racial and Ethnic Disparities in the Criminal Justice System (NC-CRED), will be giving a presentation on implicit bias and structural racism, and their impact on the criminal justice system. We'll be following this assembly with a workshop for anyone who wants to spend more time exploring these important topics.
  • December 11th - our Solstice celebration! Like last year, we won't have a speaker, but will have more singing (including secular holiday songs), and more community involvement. We'll be putting together a planning committee for anyone who's interested in being more involved - stay tuned!
  • January 8th - our second anniversary! We'll be celebrating our second year as a community in fine style, with community testimonials from some of our long-term members, and some other surprises!

Help Out!

Want to help out your assembly? Let us know! You can reply to this email to get in touch with the organizational team. We can use help with the following:

  • Ideas for speakers, readings, or songs - the organizing team are happy to find speakers, readings, moments of science, or themes for an assembly, but we're even happier to include your ideas. The more voices that are heard on stage, the better!
  • Hosts, readers, or singers - make your voices heard in a very literal way by getting up on stage. Don't worry, Sunday Assembly members make the most supportive audience ever!
  • Greeters or welcomers - we can always use help getting people oriented when they come in. We also like to have designated people to introduce themselves to newcomers and help them feel welcomed.
  • Setup or breakdown volunteers - those chairs won't unfold themselves!
  • Snack-bringers - bring along something healthy and/or tasty to share with everyone.
