Supporting our work

Remember, remember - please help in November!
November is Giving Month here, when we’ll be asking alumni to help today’s students with financial support. There are lots of ways you can get involved…Answer the call - our student callers will be ringing alumni like you during November to ask for support. The time you spend talking to them also gives them valuable advice about their future studies and careers. Support students in financial need or with community, volunteering and sporting projects - you can give online or by post. Put the ‘fun’ into fundraising and organise an event to raise money for students. You can see our pack with ideas and guidance here. Follow the campaign on Facebook and Twitter, and look out for news in your next alumni update. However you choose to be involved, you can be sure that today’s students are better off thanks to the kindness and generosity of alumni like you. Thank you!

Invest in QMUL spinouts
QMUL has a strong record of creating and developing spinout companies from its research activities. From orthopaedic materials company Apatech, that was sold in 2010 for $330m, to hVIVO and Actual Experience, two AIM-listed companies with a current combined market capitalisation of over £200m, Queen Mary Innovation (QMI) is committed to the creation of new exciting enterprises generated by its academics and students. Plans are being developed for a new QMUL Spinout Investment Fund that will offer alumni the opportunity to invest in the development of scientific, technological and creative innovations. The Fund will seek to invest under conditions providing the significant tax reliefs for individual investors offered by the EIS and SEIS Schemes. Investors may also have the opportunity to become more directly involved in the development of the new enterprises. Contact Dr Graeme Brown, Director of Technology Transfer, QMI.

And finally...

Did you complete your degree in 2012-13?
You may recall completing a questionnaire as part of the Higher Education Statistics Agency’s (HESA) Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education (DLHE) survey six months after you completed your studies. There is now another opportunity for some of you to let us know what you have been doing since you qualified. IFF Research, on behalf of HESA, is conducting a survey (the ‘DLHE Longitudinal Survey’) and they may get in touch with you soon. Any information you provide will help in reviewing and promoting courses and giving current students an insight into early career progression, as well as providing input to government policy development and review. If you are contacted by IFF Research (by email, post or telephone), please take a moment to complete the survey. The results will be available online next summer. Find out more.
