Notes From Nancy Berkley

I had planned to begin my September "Notes from Nancy" with news of who won the Evian Championship -- the last "major" of the LPGA season. (The winner was In Gee Chun of Korea). And then I was going to follow up with who won the Rolex Annika Major Award (Lydia Ko won that award).  And then I was going to mention how the Race to the CME Globe Tournament which caps off the LPGA season was stacking up (Lydia Ko leads in CME points).  And then I was going to mention that the men's Ryder Cup begins next week and I was going to compare the men's Ryder Cup to the women's Solheim Cup in 2017.

And then... Arnold Palmer died.   "Forget one-time awards," I said to myself.  Let's talk about Arnold and a lifetime of victories and gifts to the game of golf.

Many tributes have been written but I like this one from the USGA and am passing it along:

"Arnold touched every corner of the golf community. We loved the way he played the game - daring and bold; always with confidence. In the 1950s, through a perfect combination of the new medium of television, the energy of post-war prosperity, and his unique combination of talent and charisma, he made golf cool and accessible, put the game on a global stage and propelled it to new heights."   Arnold was the perfect person in the perfect time and place to make the world aware of the game of golf."

I was part of "Arnie's Army" and watched his play.  What I remember most about Arnold is his unique golf swing.  Arnold made it okay to be different.

Arnold Palmer's swingArnold's swing has been referred to as a rocket launch and the most efficient golf swing of any professional golfer.  In this photo, note that on the downswing the shaft is just a blur -- moving too fast for the camera to catch -- and the last movement of his swing as he fired at the ball.

BE HAPPY, BE HEALTHY. LIVE LONGER, PLAY GOLF
