Sunday Platform

A Platform Meeting: Feeling the Pain
With Jone Johnson Lewis

Sunday, October 2nd, 2016 @ 11 AM

Healing can only begin when we accept that there has been hurt or injury. When we deny our pain, we also avoid healing, repair, and reconciliation. It’s true in our personal lives, and it’s also true when we look at the needs in the world for healing, repair, and reconciliation. “Just get over it” isn’t really a great prescription for moving ahead when there has been suffering, pain, and even oppression. With Clergy Leader Jone Johnson Lewis. Platform meeting is followed by Munch With the Bunch, an opportunity to share coffee, snacks, and conversation with others.

All our platforms are free and all are welcome!

All members of BSEC and their personal guests are welcome at the learning sessions of Lucy's Children.  Non-members are welcome to observe business meetings without direct participation. We are a volunteer membership group convening to be a catalyst for conversations at BSEC as well as in the outside world on Ending Systemic Racism and White Supremacy. We seek to engage in conversations, develop programs, promote personal development, and deepen our interpersonal connections. We seek to learn from our individual and shared experiences and engage in advocacy on racial issues in the wider world.
Lucy was discovered in 1974 by paleontologists in Ethiopia. At that time she was the earliest known ancestor of the human species. This is why we call our group Lucy’s children.

Permaculture students will help convene and lead. There will be gatherings on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month through the season at 1:00. (Not to compete with the Society Writers who meet at the same time, but to offer more shared activities at that time slot.) Children are most welcome!!.
The Gardening Gathering team

Brooklyn Society Writers

We are a group of writers of all levels and disciplines dedicated to promoting the art and craft of writing.
Join us on the 2nd & 4th Sundays of each month from 1:00 PM to 3:30 PM.
Our meetings start with a quick writing prompt to get us writing together. The remaining time is devoted to listening and reviewing drafts and pieces from fellow writers. We share work that is anywhere from rough drafts to those that are polished to perfection. On occasions, we also invite published authors to read and share their experiences with the group. Events in the Wider Community

Co-sponsored by Brooklyn Society For Ethical Culture’s Ethical Living Committee

Propeller is a Brooklyn-based wellness initiative that aims to promote positive mental and emotional well-being through community building, shared creative play, mutual support practices, and advocacy work. We have a particular interest in fostering positive community among--and assimilating insights and wisdom from--individuals with past or present experience of mental health issues/extreme states. (The term "extreme states” is used here to recognize and include those who do not necessarily believe that extreme modes of awareness should automatically be viewed as health problems.)
To receive notifications about upcoming Propeller events, you can:A. Send an e-mail to propellerproject@gmail.com asking to be added to the mailing list
B. Join us on Meetup.com: http://www.meetup.com/Propeller/
C. Join the secret group on Facebook (this is a private group that can only be seen by those who have been added/invited to the group already--if you would like to be added you can either e-mail propellerproject@gmail.com from the address associated with your Facebook account OR friend me on Facebook--https://www.facebook.com/joshua.krieble--and ask me to add you to the group in a private message)
If you know anyone with experience of mental health issues/extreme states who you think may benefit from knowing about Propeller, please feel free to share any and all of the above information with them.

Ethical Humanist Award- presented to Planned Parenthood (NYSEC)

The New York Society for Ethical Culture presents the Ethical Humanist Award to Planned Parenthood: Still fighting for women's rights after 100 years!

The Ethical Humanist Award, established in 1970, is the Society’s highest honor. It recognizes an individual who has acted with extraordinary moral courage, without regard for the sanction or acclaim of his or her peers or of society, and whose actions have had broad humanizing implications. This is the first time the Award is being given to an organization, marking the moral courage and tenacity of so many who have worked for women’s rights.
