Celebrating volunteers
At the Here For You Centre AVA recently had a celebration for Volunteers to show appreciation of their time and commitment to volunteering. The volunteers received a certificate of appreciation stating the volunteering hours they had given to the centre and then we all sat down to a well deserved cuppa and a slice of cake - kindly baked by Audrey who also volunteers. We had a fantastic get together where some emotional tears were shed, but  then the laughter and smiles took over, making it all worth while!

Older people’s event in Banchory
The older people’s forum in Banchory, along with Aberdeenshire Voluntary Action, is organising a community event for older people on 7th October in the West Church, Banchory. The morning (from 10am to 12 noon) will be an opportunity to find out about services and activities for older people across Aberdeenshire as well as about changes happening in health and social care provision. There will be stalls from a range of organisations on volunteering, health matters, self directed support, welfare issues and lots more. There will also be workshops on setting up and running an older people’s forum, more on self directed support, a chance to have your say on a review of Social Work transport policy and an opportunity to relax and try tai chi. The event is free and there will be tea and coffee available. The afternoon session from 1pm to 2.30pm will be a meeting of the Aberdeenshire older people’s forum followed by a chance to meet and ask questions of Iain Ramsay, the new manager for Aberdeenshire South of the recently formed Health and Social Care Partnership. Anyone is welcome to come to part or all of the event on 7th October. Marr Health & Social Care Wellbeing Fund 2016 - 17
Aberdeenshire Health and Social Care Partnership has made Integrated Care Funding available through six Local Reference Groups (LRGs). Marr Community Planning has been awarded funding from the Marr LRG to benefit local community and voluntary groups who are providing health and wellbeing support in their communities. The purpose of this funding is to support health improvement work and support vulnerability for those third sector/voluntary and community organisations providing support to older people in the Marr area.

The aim of the Health & Social Care Integration fund is to support communities/partners to focus on prevention, early intervention, and care and support for people with complex and multiple conditions, especially people under the age of 65 years with multiple health issues, and older people. The funding can be accessed by anyone who is working towards improving the health and social care needs of their community or communities of interest in a way that meets local needs and reflects local circumstances.

Please see the relevant documents you need in order to apply for the funding:

Big Lottery Celebrate Scotland Fund
Big Lottery are offering grants of between £500 and £5,000 for groups to hold one off events or activities which celebrate their local community. You could also celebrate something from your community’s history or a local hero. Or maybe it’s a chance to bring people together to get to know their neighbours better. They have £575,000 for projects in Scotland. What will you celebrate? Find out more about the funding and apply here: http://tinyurl.com/jbnp7cz

Introducing Stories, Stones and Bones from the Heritage Lottery Fund
Heritage Lottery Fund are helping your local groups celebrate Scotland’s year of History, Heritage and Archaeology 2017 with funding from £3,000 - £10,000 and a desire to see more people and new people engage with Scotland’s heritage through it. The programme mirrors the Sharing Heritage programme for those that are familiar with it. Straightforward and short, with a single round application and a decision within 12 weeks of applying. The next deadline for this programme is 31st January 2017, and they’d really like to see a good spread of projects across Scotland and across communities. Projects can focus on any heritage and they also hope to help break down some of the barriers that people face when accessing or understanding heritage too. HLF are particularly keen to work with groups that perhaps haven’t accessed their funding before, and have specialised support in the office for those from minority ethnic communities, disability groups and youth organisations. Any and all groups/organisations can apply though as long as they’re constituted and not-for-profit and HLF staff are on hand to offer advice and support through the application process too.

Marie Curie Helper service
The Marie Curie Helper service is provided by trained volunteers who offer one-to-one support to people with a terminal illness (cancer and other illnesses), completely free of charge. This support may also continue for their carers and families after bereavement. The service was launched in Grampian last August and is now operational with over 30 volunteers now trained and ready to offer support. Marie Curie Helper volunteers support people in their homes, offering a few hours of their time each week to provide a listening ear and companionship; give families and carers a short break from their caring role; offer practical support, such as accompanying individuals to appointments or simply going out for a coffee; or help with sourcing information on other available support. A Marie Curie Helper does not provide any nursing or medical care or advice. Our Helper volunteers are provided with training and support to enable them to undertake their roles. There are trained volunteers available now in Aberdeen City, Aberdeenshire and Moray.

If you are interested in finding out a little more about this service or know someone who might benefit from some support please contact: Ingrid Penny, Helper Service Manager for Grampian on 0800 304 7024 Email: grampianhelper@mariecurie.org.uk.

Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland’s Services in Aberdeen
Stroke is the major cause of disability throughout Scottish communities and in North East of Scotland alone more than 11,000 people are living with the effects of stroke. Scotland’s Health Charity Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland runs stroke services throughout Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire for people who have had a stroke and is appealing for volunteers to help support the charity’s services across the area. As the charity’s local coordinator Shaheen Salaripour explains: “Our Community Stroke Services offer support to people living with the effects of stroke. The services depend entirely on the help of local volunteers and we’d like to hear from anyone interested in giving some time to help in this rewarding role. Full training is provided and expenses reimbursed.”
If you don’t see yourself volunteering within the stroke service we have other roles for you to consider.  Perhaps you have a passion for fashion and would prefer to be using your skills volunteering in one of our boutique charity shops in Banchory?  Or maybe you would rather be assisting with some of our exciting fundraising events.  Whatever you feel you could manage in your spare time we will have a role to suit you. Also did you know that research has shown that volunteering is good for your health? It helps beat stress and keeping physically and mentally active can often improve your state of mind.  Whether you’re looking to enhance your CV or simply do something worthwhile in your spare time you can be sure of a rewarding experience.
To find out more about CHSS or how you can help, please visit our website on www.chss.org.uk or call Shaheen on tel: 07918 690648 email: Shaheen.salaripour@chss.org.uk

Scottish Rural Parliament 2016
6th - 8th October, Brechin Community Campus, Duke Street, Brechin.
The ‘Rural Parliament’ is an event which takes place every two years. It is not a formal part of government, nor is it a parliament in the sense of a legislative or decision-making body. It is a ‘bottom-up’ process of involvement and debate between the people of rural Scotland and policy makers to enable better understanding, improved policy and action to address rural issues. The Rural Parliament is run by Scottish Rural Action, a non-profit, apolitical organisation which is completely independent of Government. They are a company formed with the dual purpose of developing and organising Scotland’s Rural Parliament and supporting the development of a rural movement. Huntly Exercise for Life Class
This class is designed to promote and maintain mobility, flexibility and functional strength – in other words, “Exercise for Life”!
The class will be seated and is therefore suitable for individuals with limited mobility and can be adapted to accommodate wheelchair users, however, balance retraining exercises will be incorporated for those who are on their feet. Minimal equipment will be used making it easy for everyone to join in, even those who are new to exercise, and the emphasis will be on simple exercises designed to increase fitness for everyday life. Each class will include a 15-minute group warm up to promote joint mobility, 30-minute structured exercise programme to develop functional strength and balance, and 15-minute cool down to promote flexibility. Mobility, flexibility and functional strength training is ideally suited to newcomers to exercise, individuals recovering from accidents or illness, or anyone who has been advised by their GP to get more exercise but they don’t know where to begin. Balance retraining exercises are specifically designed to minimise the risk of falls in older people and will help to rebuild the confidence of those who have already experienced a fall. The first session will be on Wednesday 26th October 2.30 - 3.30pm at Huntly Fire Station.

Are you interested in helping your local community to become more active?
A Volunteer Walk Leaders Training Course is being held in Banff on Friday 28th October 2016 and in Stonehaven on Thursday 6th October. The course is designed to establish a group of local people (aged over 18 years) who are trained to promote and lead Health Walks on an ongoing basis.
Only one day of training is necessary but information will be provided to support development of local walks in Banff and Buchan for walk leaders attending the training through Paths for All and through local contacts. A Health Walk is a short, local, low level walk which seeks to encourage and support people to become more active.  A typical health walk usually lasts between 10 minutes and 1 hour.
For booking and more information on the Banff training please contact:  Ruth Hepburn, Public Health, Chalmers Hospital, Banff. Email: ruthhepburn@nhs.net. For booking and more information on the Stonehaven event, visit: http://tinyurl.com/h32no33.
