Education chiefs at Middlesbrough Council are reportedly drawing up a new strategy with radical plans to tackle the underperformance of the area’s schools. This comes after a report written by Lord Heseltine and commissioned by the Government, concluded that problems with education and skills are the “thorn in Tees Valley’s side”.

Education Select Committee launches inquiry into primary assessment

MPs have launched an inquiry into primary assessment to investigate the impact of recent reforms on teaching and learning. The inquiry will consider the wider effects of assessment on primary schools, as well as possible next steps for Government policy. This comes after a year in which baseline tests were scrapped and a security breach led to the cancellation of a KS1 test.

Teaching assistants to be balloted on strike action in County Durham
Schools Northeast
Teaching assistants in County Durham are to be balloted on strike action after they rejected a final pay offer by the local council that unions claim could result in a 20% pay cut. The Unison and GMB unions held consultative ballots with their members over Durham county council’s plans to fire 2,700 classroom assistants and re-employ them on term-time only contracts.

Teacher severance pay cap will cost schools, warns union
 
The Treasury has confirmed it will be enacting a £95,000 cap on severance payments following a consultation that proposed to end six figure exit pay-outs for public sector workers, including teachers and civil servants.

Schools Northeast   The Education Policy Institute has published new data analysis and evidence on grammar schools, after plans of expansion were announced. The report is claiming to be the most detailed study of Government education data on selective schools for almost a decade. It found that once prior attainment and pupil background is taken into consideration, we find no overall attainment impact of grammar schools, either positive or negative. Read more >
