So, are people still buying pianos?

Yes.  Interestingly, the ratio of new vs. second hand pianos sales has changed significantly over the years.

The number of new pianos sold in the UK last year on the face of it, seems very small. 2000. Yes, only two thousand (and a bit) new pianos were sold here last year. About thirty years ago the figure was 14,000. On the face of it, this seems like a massive decrease, and we’re often asked “Are fewer people learning the piano?”

A few enquiries to our piano teacher friends would seem to suggest that the numbers of young people learning piano and keyboard is ever increasing, so this can only be a good thing… so why those sales figures?

Firstly let’s examine the details. “New pianos”. That means new acoustic pianos with strings and soundboards and nice sturdy casework. We sell a fair few new pianos at The Piano Gallery, but we also sell a huge number of specially imported pre-owned Japanese pianos such as Yamaha and Kawai. These have often been reconditioned for use in Europe, and are very high quality and excellent value, so they will impact on new sales figures. Thirty years ago, there were no imported used pianos, and we reckon they make up about a quarter or more of our sales today. Also, back then, the digital piano was in its infancy and they were very expensive, whereas today, you can buy a good digital for around £1300…so digitals have a marked effect on new piano sales, but we think the main reason that new piano sales are so low is… used piano sales.

Thirty years ago, a used piano was likely to have been made in the 1920s or 1930s, was made of mahogany and took up a lot of houseroom. Many had been less than well cared for, and some had suffered badly from the effects of central heating. So your best option was to buy a new one. Suited to central heating, often more compact, and guaranteed to be reliable. These days, a used piano is likely to be one of the 14,000 per annum sold in the 1980s, and is really in its prime if not in the first flush of youth, with many years of life ahead of it. We would argue then, that the reason new piano sales are so low is mainly because used ones are so good! Of course we are proud to offer a selection of some of the best new pianos in the country, but don’t forget to look at our pre-owned pianos too. You may find yourself a bargain!
