OCTOBER 2016 ISSUE

Dear <<First Name>>,

Loyal alumni – that’s what Walla Walla University is known for.

Some show their loyalty through their apparel choices - Frank Howard ’77 in his orange and green socks at Homecoming, and Ed Karlow ‘66 and his wife, Barbara (pictured left), sporting matching WWU shirts at Rosario Sabbath in August.

Others come to our many events – this year a total of 37 around the country with 5,600 alumni served. Our event locations ranged from Portland, Medford, and Eugene in Oregon; Yakima, Auburn, and Seattle in Washington; Loma Linda in California; Denver in Colorado; British Columbia; and Montana…..

We’ve enjoyed “Pie with the President” (Pieology and MOD are favorites), dessert buffets, and a potluck or two. I like to say our alumni/advancement team has the best jobs at WWU – the privilege of meeting with our alumni, parents, and students.

Take a moment to check the calendar for upcoming events – perhaps one is in your area. We will look forward to sharing a story or two, and celebrating all things alumni.

ALUMNI NEWS

Class of 2016 Largest Class Since 2000
In June, 342 graduates joined the ranks of our alumni. They are the largest class to graduate since 2000, with nursing graduates leading the way with 57 graduates, business with 47 and engineering with 46. Women outnumbered men by 4 percent, and 73 percent of the class came to WWU as freshmen.
The Class of 2016 achieved high academic standing, with 77 cum laude graduates, 40  magna cum laude, and 27 summa cum laude. Welcome to the family of proud and prestigious alumni.

Alumni Gathered at Rosario in August
Rosario Alumni Sabbath is an annual event on our coastal campus. Dave Thomas, Dean of the School of Theology (pictured right), spoke during this August event. Many guests came for the entire weekend, enjoying home cooked meals, the serene environment of ocean front cabins, and connecting with alumni.  Next year's weekend is scheduled for August 25-27, 2017. Click here for more information.
Weren't able to join us this year? Here's some beautiful time lapse footage of Rosario. The video (click here to see it) was filmed by Jesse Norris, son of Robert '89 and Jeanne (Lent) '87. In addition, Jesse’s grandparents, Dale ‘61 and Myrna (Fowler) att., were longtime caretakers of Rosario.

3 Reasons Students Are Contacting You
Look for a letter in the mail soon about the Walla Walla University Fund! Every fall, our students ask for your support for student scholarships, campus programs and facility improvements. It’s not about how much you give, but that you give.
Your gift to the Walla Walla University Fund directly supports WWU, and your participation enhances our ability to solicit grants from corporations and foundations, and also boosts our rankings in U.S. News and World Report. To donate, click here. Thanks for supporting our students!

Plan Now to Attend Homecoming 2017
The bell in the belfry of the Administration Building rang on the first day of classes Dec. 12, 1982, 125 years ago. Throughout 2017 we will celebrate the 125th birthday of the university. Homecoming 2017 will have “Celebrate” as its theme, continuing the birthday celebration.
Plan now to join us April 27-30. Two campus groups will have special events as well: Aviation will mark 50 years with a reunion (see the logo on the right that will be on planes this year) and the WWU Student Chapter of Engineers Without Borders celebrates 10 years. With over 60 events, catered meals, and an expected 900 alumni in attendance, it is sure to be a great celebration. More information as well as discounted lodging options can be found by clicking here.

Five Friends Hold Their Own Homecoming Weekend
The college years have a way of bringing people together and fostering lifelong friendships. For six women, who came to WWC in 1968, that is just what happened. In the picture, taken in 1970, the women are (left to right): Bonnie Likes Ross, Carol Boyce Iram, Kathy Stensland Locke, Josephine (Jo) Jackson Maxham, Nancy Pumroy Jackson, and Julayne (Julie) Timothy Brude.
The bonds especially deepened their sophomore year when four of them (Bonnie, Kathy, Nancy, and Julie) moved into an annex housing area across from the Whitman Hotel because the dorms were overcrowded. Mrs. Betty Duncan was their dean.
Over the years, the women have gotten together, usually just two or so at a time, and they have kept in touch through Facebook. However, recently, they decided to meet at the college for a mini-reunion. Five of them came in August, all staying together in one Havstad alumni room. Josephine Jackson Maxham was not able to attend.
They toured the campus together, visiting Conard Chapel, the new Administration building, the music building, and stopping at the Express for shamburgers. They attended church, enjoying the pipe organ and seeing their former dean Betty Duncan. They all agreed "it was the highlight of the summer."

Library Starts Second Round of Renovations
The Peterson Memorial Library is starting a new renovation project to create new study areas for students on the main level in an area where there has been stacks containing journals or books. In the lobby, new wood and glass panels will replace the current mosaic in the lobby. The shelving and mosaic tiles will be saved and used in a new way. An earlier remodel was started in 2012 and has been completed. The renovations have been made possible by generous donations from the class of 2014, the class of 2016, the class of 1966 in commemoration of their 50th anniversary, and other donors. To learn more, click here.

School of Nursing Fully Accredited
The WWU School of Nursing has received maximum accreditation for the nursing program from the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) through the maximum eligible time frame of June 2021. The CCNE found that the WWU School of Nursing met all accreditation standards with no questions or concerns. For more details on this story, click here
