Hello Rogers Park Families and members of our community!

October is here! Feels like we just started the school year, but we are almost finished with the first quarter of school. As the leaves turn color and frost starts to appear on our car windows, we know that is it almost time for parent/teacher conferences. These conferences will take place the week of October 24-28. As you prepare to schedule a time to sit down and talk with your child’s teacher, I would like to offer a few suggestions.

First, come ready to discuss more than just the report card. I know that report cards are handed out at conferences, but also keep in mind that your child is more than just the grades on the paper. Second, I would like you to take the time to share how your child is adjusting to the new school year and how they are learning the different expectations and routines. Sometimes we forget how much change can occur from year to year with each teacher and each new classroom.

Finally, if there are things in the classroom that are working well for you and your student, please share that with the teacher. As educators we are constantly assessing and changing our practices to help every child succeed. Your feedback is one of the best tools we have to gauge our success.

We are off to a great start to our school year and I look forward to an awesome October!

Parent Teacher Conferences

The upcoming Parent Teacher Conferences will be held 10/26 and 10/27. Our daily schedule will run from 9:00-12:30. The buses will run at 12:30. Students must be picked up, take the bus, go to Camp Fire or walk home at 12:30. Students will have lunch both days.

Conferences offer parents the opportunity to find out how their child is getting along with classmates, how they're progressing in school and what can be done at home to build upon strengths and overcome challenges.

Parents now have the ability to schedule conference times online. The Conference Scheduler will be available for your convenience, starting 10/7. Scheduling early offers you the opportunity to secure conference times that work best for your family. Please visit the online scheduler on or after 10/7.

**If you are unable to use the online Conference Scheduler, please contact your student’s teacher via phone or email. Teacher's emails are available on the school's website.

We are excited about this upcoming opportunity for teachers and parents/guardians to discuss important information that will help students throughout their education.

Notes from Nurse Besh

1. Photo Screening for kindergarten and first grade took place on September 29. This is used to help identify children with possible visual defects which place a child at risk for developing amblyopia. The Alaska Lions Club volunteers every year to provide the one-time screening.

2. Third and fifth grade screening was completed in September. Vision referrals were sent home for those in need.

3. Influenza Vaccines (injectable only) are available for your child during parent-teacher conferences 10/26 & 10/27 from 1:00 -6:00. Parents are required to accompany their child and vaccinations will be administered in the Nurse's office.

If you ever have any questions please don't hesitate to call me at 742-4801.

Fall Art Club
Art Club for K-3 students will most likely be starting in November. In the meantime, any students ages 11-13 who would like to stay after school on Tuesdays to create a Lions Peace Poster Contest entry can do so Oct. 11, Oct. 18, and Nov. 8 from 3:30-4:30. Students who want to participate can either register online at Ms. Henry's website or fill out a paper permission slip, which can be found in the Art Room. Students will also need to turn in a one-time $10 PTA Activity Fee, which will cover all subsequent Art Clubs they attend throughout the year.

Any questions, please contact Ms. Henry at or take a look at the Art Room website.

From the Librarian

It’s been a great start to the new year. Our kindergarten students are learning their way around the library and have had their first check out! First and second grade students are reviewing library procedures and checking out some of our exciting, new selections this year. Third through sixth grade students have all reviewed the Public Access Catalog, Overdrive (the online library) and have learned how to navigate our newly organized fiction collection. In the coming month, intermediate classes will begin work on grade level projects.

Thank you to Denise Flake for her help volunteering in the library each week. She helps to keep us well organized. A big thank you also goes to the Dumas family and Karen Mouton for their generous gift of books to the library and our students.

Book Fair!
October 26 and 27

Ahoy Mates! The annual Rogers Park Book Fair will be held in conjunction with parent conferences. Please join us in the library to pick up Battle of the Book titles, holiday gifts and great reads for any age. The book fair will open right after school and stay upon until 6:00.

The proceeds go directly to the library to ensure we can continue to add exciting new titles and amazing new series to our library.

“Rogers Park Library, where awesome meets education.”

Notes from the Health Teacher

I am enjoying being back at Rogers Park for my fifth year!  We started off the year with team building games and information about Internet Safety. During October we will continue working on the Safety theme. We will be discussing a variety of safety areas including the ASD mandated safe touch/abuse prevention lessons. We will talk about how to keep our bodies safe and what to do in unsafe situations.

Just a reminder to make sure your child knows your home address and phone number in case of an emergency. If you have younger children, making or incorporating your address and phone number into a rhyme or song helps them remember it more easily.

Please contact me, either at school or via my email, if you have any questions. I look forward to another great year and helping guide your child on their path to good health and wellness.

PTA Reflections

Do you like music? Is art your thing? Maybe you’re a FANTASTIC photographer or a CREATIVE poet? Are you a dancer or a movie maker? If so, then the PTA program: Reflections is for you!

The National PTA Reflections Program is an arts recognition and achievement program that provides an opportunity for students (preschool–12th grade) to use their creative talents by expressing themselves through their own original creation.

Each year, a new theme is selected, allowing students to explore their thoughts and feelings through creativity and interpretation. This year’s theme is, “What is Your Story?” The theme must be reflected in each student’s work and clearly related in the title or subtitle of the entry.

The goal of the Reflections program is participation, not winning. Although the program follows a “contest” format, winning is not the emphasis. Students may participate in the following arts areas – literature, musical composition, photography, visual arts, dance choreography and film/video production.

Here is the flyer and Interest form - it is due November 10. Projects will be due Tuesday, January 10, 2017.

Cardboard Challenge

Calling for Parent Chaperones!

Students at Rogers Park are invited to take part in the Global Cardboard Challenge. The Imagination Foundation sponsors this creativity and STEM activity. Students will build with recycled cardboard to a theme that will be announced on the day of the challenge. This activity fits into our science and math standards and offers students a chance to experience hands-on STEM skills that are essential to being a successful worker in the 21st century!

We need YOU to help chaperone this event! November 4 - 10:00-3:00 or any time slot during the day! If you are interested in helping with, or have questions about this activity, please email Dr. Gates.

Birthday treats! It is exciting when it is your child's birthday and we want to make sure it is a great day for your child and everyone else. Please contact your child's teacher before your child's big day if you bring treats to the classroom. The teachers have schedules to keep and will work with you to make sure the best time for a celebration is arranged. In addition, they can let you know of any allergies. All treats need to be nut free. Any questions or concerns please let us know.
Show your Running Wolf spirit and wear your Rogers Park gear on Fridays. The PTA will have additional student shirts for sale

We also have a basket in the office for clean used spirit wear that your child has outgrown. Please drop off your donations any time the office is open.
Stay in touch with the PTA via Facebook or their updated website.
Please turn in your driver form at least two weeks before the first time you drive for a field trip. The office needs copies of current license, registration, and the insurance declarations page with the amount of coverage. Beat the rush and bring in your forms now. Here is this year's Volunteer Driver Form.
The Rogers Park Readers Pack Program is based on recreational reading. Students track their minutes on a log. The minutes accumulate from the first day enrolled and continue throughout their time at Rogers Park. Download the log here.
