Dear all,

Please see below a message from Mayor John Biggs. More information on the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Cable Street can be found here

Dear friend,

The 80th anniversary of the Battle of Cable Street is a significant moment for our borough and as local politicians and community leaders it is right that we take the opportunity to mark this occasion and to reflect on the progress our borough has made since this historic confrontation.

When the people of East London rallied against fascism and Oswald Mosley’s blackshirts, they showed the spirit and community cohesion that underlies much of our borough’s history from the anti-racism movement of the 70s and 80s to our more recent fight against modern hatred in the shape of Britain First or the EDL.

There are a number of events happening across the borough to mark this occasion, including the traditional march on the Sunday, and I encourage you all to make the most of everything happening.

I would also like to invite you to join me for a small ceremony and an artistic performance by a group of budding young local actors on the anniversary itself, Tuesday 4th October from 5pm – 6pm underneath the Cable St Mural.

I hope to see you there.

Yours sincerely,

John Biggs
Executive Mayor of Tower Hamlets
