Save the date: SINAPSE Psychology Meeting
Calling all imaging psychologists and cognitive neuroscientists! The 1st SINAPSE Psychology meeting will be held on 16th January 2017 at University of St Andrews. This will be a casual half-day event providing opportunities for discussing and receiving input on projects in progress, student practice presentations, and networking with fellow neuroimagers from around Scotland. 3D printing capabilities for imaging
The development of 3D printing technology is of significance to several areas of imaging research. At Edinburgh Preclinical Imaging (EPI), an in-house 3D printed rat phantom has proven valuable for preclinical PET/CT studies and sparked interest among collaborators at other institutions.
Dr Adriana Tavares, head of the Preclinical PET/CT facility at EPI, is collecting information about 3D printing capabilities for imaging around Scotland.

Image of the Month: Hyperpolarized 129Xe MRI

Our October Image of the Month, courtesy of Prof Edwin van Beek, compares the lungs of a healthy volunteer (left) to a patient with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (right) using hyperpolarized 129Xe MRI. The inhaled gas-contrast visualises ventilation defects in the COPD patient, in both static ventilation images (top row) and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) maps (bottom row).

SINAPSE Member Profile: Robyn Duncan

At the start of this year, SINAPSE awarded funding for PhD studentships on imaging-related research projects in partnership with external organisations. The Member Profile section of our newsletter is currently being used to introduce the incoming students.
|

|
Robyn Duncan will be starting a PhD studentship at the University of Dundee where her project is titled 'Measuring and modeling haemodynamics and vessel stiffness in arterial disease and endovascular treatment' with Prof Graeme Houston and Prof Peter Hoskins, funded by SINAPSE and Vascular Flow Technologies LTD. The project aims to develop improved methods for identifying which patients will best benefit from arterial vascular surgery and which surgical procedures and devices are likely to fail. It will combine elastography, patient specific modelling and computational fluid dynamics into an integrated package with testing in phantoms and cadaveric models with eventual aims for introduction into clinical practice. Robyn completed her BSc in Forensic Anthropology at the University of Dundee in 2012. She worked as an Anatomy Technician and Prosector at the University of Dundee in 2014 before moving on to a Research Technician position, providing anatomical experience and cadaveric support to research projects. Returning from an Anatomy Technician post at the University of Aberdeen, Robyn continues to work to develop and refine cadaveric models with extracorporeal flow for use in surgical training, multi modal imaging and medical device development and is looking forward to continuing her academic career thanks to this PhD opportunity.
