Dan Fleetham, an icon of Canaan, passed away after being part of Canaan for 104 years. Dan was born in February of 1912 at a time when his family was operating the Cobb House Hotel on Canaan Street. Help Someone Out - Take a Survey or Two!

From the Recreation Department:

Community Members,

We are looking for feedback on communication with our communities about recreation opportunities in the Mascoma Valley region.  The survey is only eight questions, but your answers will be extremely helpful as we continue to improve our efforts.

From the Economic Development Committee:

Are you interested in Thai food? In Canaan?

A potential restaurant operator has expressed interest in locating a Thai cafe in Canaan.

Please take this survey.

From the Police Department:

We are asking EVERYONE in our local communities to enroll in the CODE RED program.

It is absolutely FREE. CODE RED allows us to notify you in an emergency. Your home "landline" is already enrolled, but mobile devices are not. With the increased prevalence of mobile device only homes, we need to be able to let you know if there is an emergency.

Some examples of notifications are:

DANGEROUS PERSON - STAY INSIDE
DANGEROUS PERSON - EVACUATE
FIRE DANGER - EVACUATE or PREPARE
WATER QUALITY NOTIFICATION
POLICE ACTIVITY - BE AWARE
MISSING ADULTS and CHILDREN

These are just some of the messages that we need to be able to get to our citizens quickly. Please enroll your devices into the CODE RED system to receive our EMERGENCY NOTIFICATIONS. Please let us know if you have any questions: 603-523-7400.

Sunday, 10 AM to 1 PM - Canaan Green

iInquiring minds want to know . . .

Allan TreadwellThree members of Twin Bridge Services, including Allen Treadwell pictured to the right, have been working for weeks at the Police Station, Town Office, Library and Fire Department.

You probably wonder why. We had a really bad electrical storm earlier in August that wiped out computers, switching gear, routers, amplifiers, telephone systems, radios and other electronic eequipment. A great deal of work, funded by insurance , has gone into replacing these systems. The balance of the work has been to install a new Emergency Operations Center in the Fire and Police Stations that relies heavily on communications and computers networked through departments and connected to the regional and state systems. This work was paid for by a Homeland Security Grant.

Do you think that you have problems with Wetland Regulations?

Well so does the Town. We have recently been given two letters of deficiency by DES Wetlands Bureau on two Town projects. One was Switch Road from 2001 and other was on the new ball field. In one case, we believe that the road went through the permitting process as part of the state's application when Route 4 "S" curves were reconstructed by the state. The Switch Road relocation was part of that project. in the other case, despite what the DES notification has stated about the ball field, neither the ball field nor the parking lot were on a mapped wetland; no ditch (originally created by the Town in the 1950's) was altered; and no wetland vegetation was present. We will be working with DES to resolve both of these issues.

Heard anything about an enforcement action on sub-division violations?

While the Town does not have zoning, it does have sub-division regulations. These regulations apply if your are selling part of your land, planning to sell part of your land, leasing part of your land, or planning to lease part of your land, either now or in the future.

Sub-division means the division of a lot, tract, or parcel of land into two (2) or more lots, plats, sites, or other division of land for the purpose, whether immediate or future, of sale, rent, lease, condominium conveyance or building development. It includes re-subdivision and, when appropriate to the context, relates to the process of subdividing or to the land or territory subdivided. ... Any additional dwelling placed upon a lot shall also be deemed a subdivision.

There is a current enforcement action underway against a property owner who created at least 12 residential units on a single lot; all without a permit. This action will be underway for many months. Click Here to learn more about Sub-divisions and Canaan Land Use Regulations.

Smile!

If you see a TV truck in town next week, WCVB will be taping a half hour show about Canaan for Channel 5 Chronicle in Boston. When we know the airing schedule, we will tell you.

Meeting House Railings

Thanks to everyone who donated at the Meeting House Yard Sale last weekend, as well as the raffles and tee shirt sale that supported the new railings. They are very attractive but some have questioned the cost and use of public dollars for the railings.

These railings were hand fabricated to be historically accurate for the building. The process was complicated and very expensive. This project was not one which the Meeting House Preservation Committee was prepared to undertake. There were no Town or Preservation funds to pay for the historic railings.

The railings were championed by Trish Brown who organized all of the fundraising for the project and personally contracted with Dimitry Gerakaris to complete the work. While the project was NOT a Preservation Committee project, the donations earmarked for the railings all went through the Preservation Committee for charitable purposes. Trish had the help of friends, neighbors, Canaan Hardware and individuals on the Preservation Committee. While very expensive, it has been wonderful to watch the people who have been steadied by the railing as they enter the Meeting House.

The exterior wall framing has started at the new health center! Substantial completion is expected by February 1, 2017 with a full opening to follow later in the Spring.
