Where and When We Meet

We meet at Beamish Hall every Wednesday evening.
Dining members arrive for 7.30pm and non-dining members arrive for an 8.00pm start.

What is Rotary?

Rotary International is a worldwide network of men and women who volunteer their time, skills and talents to serve communities locally and around the world. Rotary has over 1.2 million members around the world known as Rotarians.

Rotary is non-political, non-sectarian and non-religious. There are no secrets or mysteries.
Learn more about Rotary International by clicking
here

The best way to learn about our club is to come and visit us on one of our speaker nights. All you need to do is to contact our club secretary.

If you would like to dine with us, please advise our secretary by the Monday before the meeting you wish to attend.

We have a hot two-course buffet followed by tea or coffee priced at £8. If you do not wish to dine, you can arrive at 8pm.  Even if you are not dining, you need to advise our secretary that you will be attending.

Joining Rotary
We're looking for more men and women to join our club and use their time, talents, skills and energy to improving the lives of people in their local communities and others around the world.
In the process, you can enjoy the benefits of:

personal development
*
meaningful activities
*
friendships
*
fun
*
fulfilment from achieving something worthwhile.

If Rotary sounds like the organisation for you, we'd like to hear from you!
The best way to learn about our club and to decide if this is for you is to come along to some of our meetings. We are a friendly club and you will be made very welcome.
To arrange this simply ring Michael on the number below, or use the contact form on our website home page.

Commitment of Membership

We know from our own experience that people are busy and have other commitments.
This is why we offer a flexible and understanding approach.
Although the club meets weekly, members do not have to attend every week.
As Rotarians, we are proud that 100% of the monies we receive from the public go directly to where it is intended. There are no admin or running costs.
The reason for this is because Rotarians pay subscription fees. Being a member of the Rotary Club of Derwentside can cost you as little as £10 per month.

THE OBJECT OF ROTARY

The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

FIRST.
The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

SECOND.
High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society;

THIRD.
The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business and community life;

FOURTH.
The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

Our Ethos

We are proud that our outlook is to be inclusive and not exclusive.
We do not engage in rituals and our meetings, whereas structured, are informal and friendly. One of the greatest strengths of Rotary is its diversity and we embrace that. The only aspect of Rotary we can get pretty strict on is our dress code. We always insist that members wear clothes when attending meetings.

Greetings, and welcome to our e-newsletter.
Here is where we keep you informed of our activities and projects.

September has been a fun and entertaining month. We began September by going to see Kynren. If you have seen it, you will know how fantastic it was. We’ve been messing about on the water with Chester-Le-Street Sea Cadets and we attended the Hindu festival of Ganesh with Kalapremi.
Our tickets are now on sale for our annual night at the Pavilion. Places are still available, but hurry up, you know how quickly they go.
We have begun to send out invitations to join our Swimathon. So if you have a good cause that needs funding, go get your swimming cap.

KYNREN

If you never managed to see Kynren, you certainly missed a treat. But fear not, it will be on again next year. We went to see it in September and how lucky we were. We had perfect weather with a lovely clear starry sky above us, unlike the previous week when it poured with rain throughout.
We all thoroughly enjoyed this magnificent performance and would recommend it to you all.

Messing About On The Water
with
Chester-Le-Street Sea Cadets

It was anchors away and a Ho! Ho! Ho! when some of our intrepid members embarked on a great adventure into the high seas, well actually up the river really. We were treated to a splendid evening out on the river and some fine hospitality when we went to visit Chester-Le-Street Sea Cadets.  A very BIG THANK YOU to the Sea Cadets. We’ll let the video say the rest.

KALAPREMI
Ganesh Festival

With a key object of Rotary being the encouragement and fostering of international understanding, we were delighted to have the opportunity to attend the Ganesh festival, hosted by Kalapremi.
Anyone who has visited India should know that festivals play a significant role in Hindu culture. The Ganesh festival is one of the most popular festivals, along with Diwali, Holi and the Kerala Temple Festivals.
We did not however have to travel to India to see the festival. Kalapremi
Based in Stanley, County Durham Kalapremi is a vibrant and dynamic arts development organisation dedicated to encouraging participation in, and knowledge of, south-Asian arts and culture.

The Land of Oak and Iron

We were given a very informative and interesting talk recently when Kath Marshall-Ivens visited our club.  Kath is the Community Engagement Officer for The Land of Oak and Iron.
Working with local communities to conserve, enhance and celebrate our natural, industrial and cultural heritage, the Land of Oak and Iron work with partners, to deliver a legacy of job creation, tourism, regeneration and economic benefits.
The Land of Oak & Iron Landscape Partnership aims to enhance and promote the heritage and outstanding natural features within this area stretching from the Derwent Reservoir to the River Tyne.  To engage more local people and visitors, develop ownership and a lasting legacy.
There are stacks of opportunities for people to get involved in this very exciting and rewarding work and our club are looking forward to doing our bit.

The Land of Oak and Iron offers some great scope for volunteering and learning new skills.

North Durham Rotary

Swimathon

Sunday 21st May 2017

The Rotary clubs of Consett, Derwentside and Stanley have combined forces to bring to you the North Durham Rotary Swimathon. The event is taking place at the Louisa Centre Swimming Pool, Stanley on Sunday 21st May 2017, 9am til 5pm

Here is an excellent opportunity to raise funds for your own charity or organisation and have a fun day at the same time.
All you need to do is put a team or several teams of up to five members together and get yourselves sponsored for as many lengths of the swimming pool you can swim in 55 minutes.  You may then nominate a charity or cause to receive 50% of the monies raised by your team/s. The remaining proceeds will be used by the Rotary clubs to benefit other charities and causes.
The Rotary clubs will fund the hire of the pool and goody bags etc. They will also facilitate a Swimathon raffle to raise further funds.
Following the Swimathon a prize giving evening will be held. The purpose of this event will be to distribute the proceeds and to award prizes to the teams that swam the most lengths etc. This will be held after suitable time is given for the teams to collect in their sponsorship monies. We will advise you of the details in the near future.
If you would like to raise funds for your charity/organisation, you can download a registration form and leaflet by clicking on the buttons below.

Our Memory Café is still doing very well. The Memory Cafe provides an informal setting for people with short-term memory problems and their carers to exchange experiences and information.

DID YOU KNOW?
Our own charity the Foundation is soon to celebrate it’s 100th birthday. Here is a short video to tell you what we achieved so far.

Nations around the world will observe the International Day of Peace on 21 September, a date designated by the United Nations in 2001 as "a day of global ceasefire and nonviolence."

Rotary's commitment to building peace and resolving conflict is rooted in the Rotary Peace Centres program, formed in 2002. Each year, the program prepares up to 100 fellows to work for peace through a two-year master's degree program or a three-month professional certificate program at university partners worldwide.

Today, nearly 1,000 peace centres alumni are applying their skills — negotiating peace in conflict areas, drafting legislation to protect exploited children, keeping communities safe through innovative law enforcement tactics, and pursuing many other career paths devoted to peace. SPOTLIGHT ON

A DAM GOOD PROJECT

Rotary’s participation in an extraordinary and life changing project continues to go from strength to strength, helping tens of thousands of the world’s poorest people.
Rotary clubs across Great Britain and Ireland are supporting and collaborating with Excellent Development, a charity pioneering sand dams in rural communities in Kenya.
The dams are built on drylands, which take up 40% of the Earth’s land and are home to around 75% of the world’s poor.
Sand dams are three to five metre high reinforced concrete dams built on the bedrock of seasonal river channels. After the rainy season, they fill with sand and water for several hundred metres behind the dam, storing up to 20 million litres of water within the sand.
The sand filters out impurities, protects the water from contamination and prevents evaporation, providing a cost effective way of capturing and storing rainfall so that it is available all year round.
To date, over 200 Rotary clubs in Great Britain and Ireland have played a part in supporting the construction of over 40 sand dams across Kenya, with that number set to increase to just under 60 by the end of 2018. Upcoming projects expect to take Rotary’s contribution to close to £1 million, with plans to expand into new areas in the north of Kenya, as well as India.
James Onions, a member of the Rotary club of Kew Gardens, who has visited the sand dams in action commented: “The response of clubs and in Great Britain and Ireland to the lack of clean water for communities in Kenya has been tremendous, already surpassing an investment of over £700,000.”
All this work means that communities no longer have to spend up to half a day travelling to collect water which was sometimes contaminated.
James continued: “When launched it was suggested that Rotary would be able to deliver clean water at £10 per person for life and currently we are delivering water at below that cost to well over 70,000 people.”

Our RYLA candidate participating this year in our Rotary Youth Leadership Award has now finished her course.
Simone Telford is a veterinary nurse from Prince Bishop Veterinary Hospital and she will be reporting back on her progress when she visits our club soon.
