National Newspaper Week begins Sunday

This year we mark the 76th anniversary of National Newspaper Week (NNW), October 2-8.  The annual observance celebrates and emphasizes the impact of newspapers to communities large and small.

The content kit contains editorials, editorial cartoons, promotional ads and more; all available for download at no charge to daily and non-daily newspapers across North America. NNW is sponsored by Newspaper Association Managers, Inc., the consortium of North American trade associations representing the industry on a state and provincial, regional and national basis.

This year’s theme is “Way to Know!” The aim is to applaud and underscore newspaper media’s role as the leading provider of news in print, online or in palms via mobile devices.

Plan to observe National Newspaper Week by downloading these materials and devoting as many column inches as possible to reinforce the importance of your newspaper to your communities.

Please consider making the message local by editorializing about your newspaper’s unique relevance. This can be about your government watchdog role, coverage of community events, publication of timely public notices, etc.

Since the principle is timeless, the materials, new and archived, remain on the website and accessible year-round as a continuing resource.

ArkLaMiss registration underway

Longtime newspaper audience experts Gary and Helen Sosniecki will lead sessions on circulation development and marketing during the ArkLaMiss Conference in Vicksburg Nov. 10-11. Registration is now underway.

Helen Sosniecki is a newspaper management consultant and will lead a session on changes in postal delivery. She will again be available to review member newspaper postal statements with an eye out for improving efficiencies and cost savings. She retired in 2014 as a representative for Interlink, a leading provider of circulation and audience management software for the newspaper industry.

Gary Sosniecki retired in 2015 as a regional representative for Townnews.com and is a former newspaper publisher. His session will focus on the digital side of circulation, including paywalls, e-editions and bundling print with online products.

Dennis Dunn, operations manager for The Anniston (AL) Star will lead Friday morning’s Hot Ideas Exchange over breakfast. Attendees are encouraged to share success stories on promotions, cost savings and operations.

A pre-conference Newspaper Management Round Table will again be held prior to the official start of the program this year. The round table will address a number of newspaper management topics and be held the morning of Nov. 10. There is no added cost to attend the session.

Room rate for the conference is $69 nightly. Call the Ameristar at 1-855-888-7281 and reference ArkLaMiss to make your reservations. The group code is SARKLA6.

Newspaper best 'Way to Know' your community

Several years ago cyberspace was frenzied over many popular websites going dark for 24 hours to protest a federal bill meant to crack down on video piracy.

The Stop Online Piracy Act – or SOPA – was a controversial and perhaps misguided effort championed by the Motion Picture Association of America to end illegal online sharing of copyrighted material, primarily movies and music.

To protest SOPA and its potential threats to the First Amendment, Wikipedia, Google, Reddit and – heaven forbid – I Can Haz Cheezburger, among many others, all shut down for a 24-hour period to show the web-surfing world what it would be like without its daily fix of photos of cats riding in baby strollers.
