From the President...

Welcome to the beginning of autumn and the start of exciting new projects for the Zonta Club of London II.

I had a lovely summer break, and I hope you did too. One of the highlights was our annual summer fundraiser, this time an afternoon tea at Brenda Rosen’s beautiful house in Chiswick. Thank you Brenda for your kind hospitality. We had a lovely time!

The September Club meeting was a business meeting, where we plan for the upcoming year and set some goals for the Club.  Read more below…

Zonta London Garden Party at Brenda’s – Saturday, 20 August
Our annual summer fundraiser was an afternoon garden party held at Brenda Rosen’s lovely house in Chiswick, complete with beautiful artwork and décor, and a delicious lunch, thanks to Brenda’s hospitality. Brenda’s two adorable maître d's, her grandsons Luke and Logan, served us drinks and entertained us with drum-playing and singing in Spanish.

We were also joined by beautiful Zonta baby Lars, who enjoyed having Dutch nursery rhymes sung to him.  And a beautiful dog!

A lovely time was had by all and we raised £368.75, including gift aid.
Tate Modern New Switch House - Sunday, 2 October

Sue Mansfield is organising a Zonta London social and fundraiser at Tate Modern.  We will meet in the Switch House Viewing Gallery on Floor 10 near its entrance at 2pm. After a short talk on the new building, we will view the stunning views over London, then explore the rest of the building.

If you want to visit the Georgia O’Keefe exhibition (strongly recommended as a different perspective on this famous artist) remember to book your tickets in advance, suggested time 2.30. You can book here.

Otherwise make sure you don’t miss the new Louise Bourgeois room on the 4th floor beside the walkway over to the Turbine Hall building, and see the permanent exhibitions.

Afterwards, we will meet together in the Café on Level 1 looking towards the Thames at 4pm for a cup of tea and socialising.

Please RSVP to Sue Mansfield if you’d like to come on 07973 163 970 or mansfieldsr@blueyonder.co.uk.

Zonta London Care Packs project - Saturday, 19 November

This year, we are teaming up with Kiwis in London and the Elk Bar in Fulham to prepare this year’s Care Packs for women’s refuges in London.

The Elk Bar has kindly agreed to be the drop-off point and storage for toiletries for those who are not (yet) connected with Zonta, and then to host the packing day at 2pm, Saturday 19 November.

The purpose will be to draw on the expat community to collect and sort what we have into clear plastic bags of shampoo, conditioner, soap and body wash, ready for the refuges.

Angela Yin has been collecting the toiletries from Zontians and will bring them along.

Clint Heine from Kiwis in London has kindly agreed to join us as a guest speaker at our October Club meeting and will share what he has done to build a community of expats in London, as well as being nominated for the New Zealander of the Year Award this year.

Emma's Project and Daria House
We have been in touch with NIA Ending Violence, who run two refuges with 11 beds between them – Emma’s Project, which helps women escaping violence and dealing with mental health/addiction issues, and Daria House, which helps women who have survived rape and sexual exploitation.

We want to continue the Christmas Hampers project this year and we await feedback from them as to what these women might like for Christmas and how our Club can help.

Please spare a thought for these 11 women (among many other across the country) who will spend Christmas Day escaping domestic violence and will be without family.
Give As You Live

Did you know you can fundraise for the Club’s charity by doing online shopping? If ever you buy groceries, shop on Amazon, book flights, hotels, flowers or gifts, you are sure to find your preferred retailer in the Give As You Live website.

Simply sign in using Facebook, or create a new login, then select Zonta London Fund as your preferred charity. Be sure to download the Give As You Live widget, so that it automatically reminds you, as soon as you visit your preferred retailer’s website.

Your preferred retailer donates anywhere between 1% and 6.5% per purchase at no cost to you. Why not give it a go?

Reclaim the Night - Saturday, 19 November
The Reclaim the Night (http://www.reclaimthenight.co.uk/event.html) march is taking place again this year, this time on the same day as our Care Pack day at the Elk Bar.

It begins at 6:30pm at Great College Street SW1P and is a two mile walk that ends at St Paul’s Cathedral, where there will be speeches at the end. This is a women-only event, however boys aged 12 and under may attend as well.

Reclaim the Night is a march that takes place in major cities all over the world and dates back to the 1970s. Women in western countries were (and still are) at risk of being attacked while walking the streets at night, going about their business. Police, media and societal response to this was to tell women they should avoid being out alone at night, implicitly blaming women for attacks, rather than holding men accountable for violent actions.

For men who would like to show solidarity, you can take part in the White Ribbon Campaign http://www.whiteribboncampaign.co.uk, with the day being 25 November.
Amelia Earhart Dinner - Friday, 25 November
We will once again host a celebration dinner and pin ceremony of the four UK Amelia Earhart fellows.

The Amelia Earhart Fellowships are awarded to women studying PhDs or doctorates in aerospace-related sciences or engineering. It is a little-known fact that Amelia Earhart, the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean, was a Zontian. The fellowship is named in her honour.

The fellowships are made possible through the Zonta International Foundation. More information is on the Zonta International website.

The details for the dinner are as follows:
  • Time: Friday 25 November 2016 at 6.30 pm
  • Place: Radisson Blu Hotel, 22, Portman Square, London W1H 7BG
  • 2 course dinner, drinks and coffee or tea £40.00 per person
  • RSVP by email to contact@zontalondon.org
Upcoming meeting dates
  • Wednesday, 12 October – Kiwis in London's Clint Heine
  • Wednesday, 9 November – Speaker from NIA Ending Violence, Heather Harvey
  • December – Christmas event TBA
  • Wednesday, 11 January - National Association of Women's Organisations (NAWO), Zarin Hainsworth, Chair
