Collaborative Consultations
Delegate Briefing

Collaborative Consultations @NCFF16

Collaborative Consultations (Thursday 13th October) aim to harness the deep knowledge in the room to address specific challenges facing Community Foundations.

Collaborative Consultations are a structured process, with clear time boundaries and roles. Delegates will be formed into small groups with participants engaging in the exercise in different ways:

The Case Presenter
Provides a brief description of their organisation's challenge to a small group. Presentations are verbal (PowerPoint free zone) and focus on the core of the case.

The Consultants
Listen, ask, discuss and advise.  As a Consultant your role is to help the Case Presenter unpack their challenge, gain a better understanding and help them to identify and explore options that may allow for better outcomes.

The Facilitator
Each small group will have a ‘ Designated Authority’ (facilitator) who will ensure the group keeps to time and the Case Presenter and Consultants stay on track.

Collaborative Consultations are based on respectful discussion, not judgment.
Chatham House rules apply.

What we need from you
We need 8 - 10 Case Presenters (delegates willing to present their particular challenge to a small group of fellow delegates).  Challenges can be based around a broad theme or have a narrow focus.

If you have been grappling with a particular issue or problem this is a fantastic opportunity to get some fresh eyes on it.

Please contact Kate Buxton for more information or if you would like to be a Case Presenter.

Some examples of challenges :
  • establishing a new grant program (or transitioning/modifying an existing program)
  • changing/adjusting community perceptions of your foundation
  • engaging with a hard-to-reach stakeholder group
  • engaging with existing or identifying new donors
  • working with partners or collaborators around a particular project or initiative
  • lining-up stakeholders around a program, initiative or need.
Session Structure:
  • whole group overview of session objectives and structure
  • break into smaller groups
  • Case Presenters provide an overview of the challenge to their small group (5 minutes)
  • Consultants ask questions and seek clarifications from the Case Presenter (10 minutes)
  • Consultants discuss the challenge without input from the Case Presenter (15 minutes)
  • Consultants share their ‘findings’ with the Case Presenter (15 minutes)
  • Case Presenter reflects on what he/she has heard (5 Minutes)
  • whole group reflection on the exercise and shared insights.
