Young musicians get creative at conference

This summer, the International Society of Music Education (ISME) conference took place in Glasgow. There were many Youth Music Network members there, both as delegates and as speakers. So we decided to make this edition of the newsletter an ISME special!

The event was all about children and music-making, so it was only fitting that young musicians were the stars of the show. One of the highlights of the weekend was a well-received performance by the Lancashire Youth Vocal Ensemble (LYVE).

LYVE included their own unique spin on the Habanera from Bizet’s Carmen, part of the repertoire from the BBC’s Ten Pieces creative classical music programme. You can find out more about the choir here (including a couple of fantastic videos).

Until next time,

The Youth Music Network team

ISME conference round-up

More Music's Pete Moser curated a symposium on Partnership and Progress - The Development of Music Hubs in the UK.

Speakers providing inspiration and generating debate were:

Sam Spence from Ealing Music Partnership Hub, who set out an action plan for building a culturally diverse workforce;

Carol Reid from Youth Music, who explored whether the government’s National Plan is a barrier to an inclusive music education;

Douglas Noble from Drake Music, who explained the organisation's research into assistive music technology;

and Jenn Raven from Sound Connections, who argued that youth voice should be a necessity not a luxury.

Youth Music's Nick Wilsdon captured the events of the symposium on Storify.
