Jump Up to Play

Rec & Ed continues to expand our programming to include more offerings for children with special needs. This term we're excited to partner with Light Up and Dr. Leah Ketcheson to offer Jump Up To Play, an afterschool class geared toward young children with disabilities. Children ages 3-6 will learn how to throw, catch, kick and dribble in a fun and supportive environment. We have a one-to-one staffing ratio to support this model, which helps children with disabilities learn how to perform gross motor skills commonly used in play and sports. Children often have a seamless transition into recreational or league sports after attending this program.

September is National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month

One in 3 children in the United States are overweight or obese. Childhood obesity puts kids at risk for health problems that were once seen only in adults, like type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease.

The good news is that childhood obesity can be prevented. In honor of National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month, Rec & Ed encourages your family to make healthy changes together.
  • Get active outside: Walk around the neighborhood, go on a bike ride, or play basketball at the park.
  • Limit screen time: Keep screen time (time spent on the computer, watching TV, or playing video games) up to 2 hours or less a day.
  • Make healthy meals: Buy and serve more vegetables, fruits, and whole-grain foods.
Taking small steps as a family can help your child stay at a healthy weight.

Rec & Ed offers a number of classes to help you and your family stay healthy together. Try Dance Together, World Dance Sampler, Parent Teen Yoga or Family Capoeira.

Family Friendly Fundraiser (It’s a walk in the park)

Youth, adults and families are invited to walk, run or stroll the beautiful 5K course at Gallup Park on Saturday, October 15. There’s a “NEW” Kid’ Dash for ages 10 and younger in Rec & Ed’s fall youth scholarship fundraiser! For more information and to register, visit http://a2schools.org/rr4k. Help keep Rick's legacy alive by running, walking, volunteering, or donating to Rick's Run for Kids.

Have Fun and Give Back

Rec & Ed is seeking volunteer coaches for the fall basketball season. Boys and girls teams are available. Practice space, equipment and uniforms are provided. The time commitment is typically one practice and one game per week. Games run October 22 through Mid December.

Enhance Your Child’s Out-of-School Time

Afterschool programs can be a vital resource for families of school-age children by providing them opportunities to try a variety of activities, learn new skills, and enhance their academic, social, and emotional well-being.

Rec & Ed childcare and afterschool programs make every effort to ensure professional and nurturing staff work with students to widen their area of interests. For more information about the benefits of afterschool programs, check out the Child Development Institute’s article here: afterschool benefits

Stay Tuned!

Registration opens in October for Winter Basketball (boys & girls, grades 4-12) and Indoor Soccer (boys & girls, grades K-5).
Check out the full youth sports registration schedule here.
