We've Added Three Unique Homes to Our 'Completed Lawn to Garden Projects' Page

Even if you’ve seen our web page of completed local Lawn to Garden projects, please take another look.  Every month we add three more homes to the page, giving you a chance to see how your neighbors are beautifully saving water.

The three houses we’ve added this month are from Clayton, Walnut Creek and Concord.  The home in Concord is among the most unique and interesting projects we’ve seen locally, with very angular raised white beds, walkways and even plant placement. This home has a neat “succulent art wall,” with cutouts for cactus. The homeowners already had several large palm trees in the yard, and built these large planters and the garden around them.

In one of the other homes, the owners removed a large olive tree and replaced it with a water-saving garden.  The result is that the garden now frames the beauty of what was once an almost-hidden and elegant home.  In the third house, the homeowners used existing huge trees to center their design, which is now very welcoming with a clever walkway that winds through the trees.

The homes we’ve featured on this page are just a few of the hundreds of houses within the District that have converted from water-consuming lawns to water-saving gardens. Nearly 2 million square feet of lawn has disappeared within the District since 2012.

This angular design in Concord is among the most unique Lawn to Garden projects we've seen in the District. Look here to see more recently-added projects on our page.

A Survey May Help You Save Water

“This is the time of year when many people waste the most water,” said CCWD Water Conservation Specialist Nicolle Fratus.

She explained that with temperatures staying warm (or very hot this past weekend), many people put much more water on their yards than is needed.  She said with days growing shorter, it’s the amount of sunlight that determines how much water is needed, not the temperature.

Signup to have a free Home Water Use Survey. Among the things we’ll do is program your irrigation timer to this time of year, show you how you can do it yourself and leave an irrigation schedule for you to follow.

In October, you need to water your lawn only twice a week, your trees and shrubs once a week.

Our water conservation experts will also go through your house to check for leaks in toilets and more.
