Welcome to ECG's monthly newsletter, providing insights and advice about all things HR!
October 2016

Greetings

As we enter the last quarter of 2016, it is hard for me to wrap my head around all of the new employment and wage & hour laws that have hit us this year; and they’re still coming! Charts have had to been made just to keep track of the various minimum wage ordinances according to the specific industry, or the geographical location within Los Angeles County. Heads are spinning at all levels; even by the most sophisticated and experienced HR professionals. HR California is always a good resource, and there are many benefits of becoming a member of this Association.

But should you ever receive a letter from one of your active or past employees, through their employment counsel; well that’s the time you should obtain legal representation. If you were to contact us, this would be our recommendation. We are not attorneys but Human Resources professionals. Certainly we have decades of experience in employment law, employee & labor relations and HR best practices. But if and when you receive such a communication, that is the time to contact your legal counsel. Like doctors, attorney’s have specialties. A contract attorney for example, may not know the ins and outs of employment law, and for the best representation with this type of matter, an “Employment Attorney” is who you need to contact.

We have worked with many such attorneys for many years, and it would be our pleasure to provide you with recommendations, should you be in need of one. We’re always here to help!

On a lighter note, now might be a good time to plan and prepare for a fun and exciting employee relations event, like a pumpkin carving, cubicle or communications board decorating contest! Maybe even a costume party with sodas and snacks for your employees… So many ideas! Make sure your employees understand how much you appreciate them! We hope you have a delightful and “safe” Halloween celebration ~~~ Enjoy!

Partner Highlight – Best Performance Systems

We have known Doctor Barry Carlin for over 20 years and have referred him to many of our clients, network of HR professionals and friends! Whenever we have clients who experience heavy workers compensation claims, we always turn to Barry and Best Performance Systems. Through his training and practices, he has reduced our clients’ WC claims and for that we are so very grateful.

About Best Performance Systems

Since 1992, Best Performance Systems has had a 100% success rate. Our current average is a 50-94% reduction in injury related costs. What has worked for others will most certainly work for you.

For years, businesses have been trying to influence employees to work safer with posters, brochures, videos, classes, incentives, corporate programs etc. However, nothing changes. Management often knows what needs to change, but become frustrated from the lack of success. Best Performance Systems succeed where other programs fail. We conduct an extensive evaluation of your workplace and involve your workforce in the development of a customized program, tailored to the job tasks. Then, the program is delivered in a “behavioral modification” manner which has proven to be highly successful.

We reduce workers compensation costs by 50%-94% by improving productivity, moral and worker retention. We have developed an integrated system that guarantees injury reduction and prevention, a system that your employees will embrace. Your employees will feel empowered and feel better from the first day of training.

Supervisors embrace the training because Best Performance Systems demonstrates that their needs for improved productivity are fulfilled by workers using safe work habits. Supervisors learn to recognize and reward safe behavior as well as recognize and interact to correct unsafe behavior. They receive tools that require minimal investment of valuable time.

Highlights from our blog:

Employee rights: Military Spouse Leave. An employee is eligible for military spouse leave if he or she is the spouse or registered domestic partner of a “qualified member” of the military, and works an average of 20 or more hours per week. In California, employers are required to grant employees with unpaid leave if their military spouse is on leave from deployment. Learn more.

HR consulting: How smaller clients benefit. Typically, smaller employers do not have the resources to have a professional human resources person on staff, such as an HR Director or an HR Manager. When smaller companies get into trouble, they will then call upon an employment attorney to “fix” whatever the issue is… and this can be quite costly. Learn more.

HR best practice: Handling employee stress claims. Work stress claims are workers compensation related. All employers, regardless of size, must have workers compensation insurance. In the event of a work-related injury or illness, employers must provide medical benefits and wages to employees through their WC carrier. Read more.

Halloween teambuilding! Take every opportunity to celebrate with your staff; celebrate Halloween and create a fun and engaging work environment. Halloween is not only a popular tradition amongst young children but it is also an exciting holiday for many adults as well. Promote an engaging work environment for your entire staff and celebrate this exciting holiday with fun activities and creative, work-appropriate costumes. Learn more.
