September 2016 Newsletter

Hello <<First Name>>

Are you as excited about fall as I am? I can't wait for the cooler weather to settle in and I can break out the scarves (of which I have many), sweaters, and boots. I'm also happy to get back into the studio on a regular schedule to explore ideas that have been percolating in my brain over the past few months. I've included a sneak peek at one of these ideas in the newsletter.

Flight Path / Taking Flight

Flight Path / Taking Flight is an installation made up of hundreds of paper crow wings I created two years ago for a show at the Gladstone Hotel in Toronto. I'm excited to share the news that this piece will finally have a Vancouver area debut thanks to an invitation to show it by the North Vancouver Arts Council.

I'll be installing the crow wings at City Atrium Gallery, which is a lovely space located in the North Vancouver City Hall. The work will be available for public view from October 17th, 2016 until January 10th, 2017, so you'll have plenty of time to see it.

There won't be a formal exhibition opening but I invite you to attend an artist talk I will be presenting at noon on Wednesday October 19th, 2016. I hope to see you there!

Hammer Cut Stitch Repeat

Thank to everyone who attended the opening of Hammer Cut Stitch Repeat at the beginning of September. I appreciate your support, and Simone, Patsy, Su, Nell and I could not have asked for a better group of people to help us celebrate the launch of the show. The exhibition continues until October 11th, so there is still plenty of time to see it.

The photo included here is the latest iteration of my flowerburst installation, incorporating some of the red pieces I've cut over the past year. It's a long term project I plan to add more to over time, and it's wonderful to get the opportunity to exhibit different versions of the work.

Expanding Stitching Repertoire

In my last newsletter I mentioned I'd taken up Sashiko stitching as a side project to embellish clothing, and since then I've begun to learn more elaborate embroidery stitches. This past week the stitching and paper work came together in a few experiments I am happy resulted in success.

French knots in paper

I'm in love with making French knots in paper and created three pieces, including the one pictured here, during my studio time last week. I made up the composition as a went along, mostly with the purpose of getting a feel for embroidering paper. I drew concentric circles on the back to guide me, and pre-punched the holes before making the stitches. It's a very satisfying process.

You can view the other paper embroidery pieces on my Instagram account »
