On Sunday, October 2, we will celebrate our 142nd year as a church. This special service will include a sermon by Dr. Drexel Rankin, a past senior minister of the church (see below for more). Following worship, we will have a potluck lunch in the Christian Life Center. This will be a special time of fellowship, renewing friendships, and sharing sweet memories.  Please mark your calendars for this special day of celebration.

Drexel Rankin served the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) as an ordained minister for more than 35 years with full time pastorates in Indiana, Alabama, and Kentucky.  He retired after serving in full time interim ministry in Illinois, Indiana, and Kentucky.  He and his wife Patty live in Louisville, Kentucky.  Dr. Rankin enjoys traveling, writing, carving and painting wooden decoy ducks and animals, bird feeding, and spending time with his grandchildren.  He has been published in twenty different periodicals. In retirement, he has worked regularly in the food pantry at his church, delivers weekly Meals On Wheels with his wife, and recorded books weekly at Recording For the Blind & Dyslexic. He served as a member of the RFB&D unit board. Drexel also read for Audio Studio For the Reading Impaired. He and his wife serve leadership roles in their church’s Stephen Ministry.

We invite you and your family to join us on Saturday, October 15 for a day of service to our community. Opportunities to serve are available for all ages. At 8 AM we will gather at the church for breakfast and communion, and then head out to our worksites at the Lovelady Center, First Light Shelter, and Workshops, Inc. Go to www.fcc-bhm.org to sign up today.

Faith Foundations Groups Now Underway

Faith Foundations is a series of small group experiences designed to help you grow closer to God and to one another. Right now we are offering one session of Joyful Generosity (FF3), and one session of Intro to Discipleship (FF1).  Intro to Discipleship meets on Wednesday evenings, and Joyful Generosity meets on Sunday evenings.  If you weren't able to sign up for a fall group, don't worry: we'll offer additional groups this spring.

Faith Matters, a new Sunday morning class for adults and older youth, will begin meeting weekly on September at 9 AM in Room 205 upstairs.  Troy Tatum and Robin Blakemore will take turns leading this discussion-oriented class, working through a new topic every four to six weeks.  If you are not currently involved in a Sunday morning small group, we hope you will give Faith Matters a try!

"STITCHES AND STUFF"
Friday, September 30 at 10:00 a.m.
"Stitches and Stuff" will meet this Friday, September 30 at 10:00 a.m. in the Fireside room.

If you have a knitting or sewing project or if you just want some good fellowship...all are welcome to join us!
Congregational Meeting Set for Oct. 23
We will have a congregational meeting after worship on Sunday, October 23.  The primary purpose of this meeting will be to consider changes to our governing documents.  Please click here for more information about these proposed changes and the agenda for the congregational meeting.
TUESDAY MORNING LADIES BIBLE STUDY
The Ladies Bible Study meets in the Farkas Room on Tuesday mornings at 10 AM for study, fellowship, and service.  Each week we fill our Backpack Buddy Bags for Vincent Elementary students, and spend time in discussion.  This fall we are studying A Year of Biblical Womanhood by Rachel Held Evans.  On October 4, we will discuss Chapter 5 (February).  We would love for you to join us!
Dear Church family,

I guess time really does fly when you are having fun! We are saying goodbye to September this week and hello to October next week.  It is hard to believe that we have been in school for one month.

During the month of October, we will be welcoming fall.  We hope the weather will cooperate! At the end of October, we will be having our Fall Festival. The festival will be on Thursday, October 27 at 6:00.  Please make plans to join us if you can.  We are in need of a few volunteers to help serve the food.  If interested, please let me know.

Thanks for all the support and love you give us!

May God bless you!
Debbie

HOW CAN YOU HELP? GLAD YOU ASKED...
Our students are excited about the opportunity to spend time together and grow in their faith as they learn to follow Jesus more fully. And we all know it just wouldn't be the same without food, right? We would appreciate it if you would consider signing up for a meal one week. We are using sign-up genius to help track each week and we think it will make everything simpler. All you have to do is click the link below for a list of available dates, choose one that works for you and sign up. You're welcome to team up with others, just choose a point person to sign up. Please remember, if you would like to be reimbursed, save your receipts and give them to Donnette Mee or Robin Blakemore and we'll make sure you get a check. Also, you can apply those receipts to your giving statement if you'd like to make it a tax deduction.

Check out the schedule and sign up here.

If you have questions please contact Robin.
Now Hiring
First Christian Church is actively seeking to fill two staff positions.  We are searching for an additional paid nursery worker for Sunday mornings. Interested applicants should contact Robin Blakemore.  We are also searching for a music director.  More information about the music director position, including how to apply, is available here.
