Complete Streets was BUSY in September!

On September 7, the Pasadena Complete Streets Coalition held our meeting at a special location - the Hale Solar Observatory.  Special thanks to Elizabeth Moule and Stefanos Polyzoides for hosting us at their home.  Michael Johnson from Pasadena Public Health was our main speaker.
On September 16, the Pasadena Complete Streets Coalition created a parklet for PARK(ing) Day in front of Distant Lands Bookstore in Old Pasadena.  With bubbles and paper lantern crafts and taiko drumming, we reclaimed parking spaces for people!
On September 17, members of the Pasadena Complete Streets Coalition took a tour of Metro's Bike Share from Union Station in downtown Los Angeles.  As Pasadena moves closer to adopting Bike Share for Pasadena, we learned about smart stations vs. smart bikes, that most of the stations are solar powered, and whom to call if you get a flat tire on a Metro bike.  We encourage everyone to take a spin!
Ghost Bike Memorial for Alan Deane
Sept. 22, 1950 - Sept. 22, 2011
On September 22, the Pasadena Complete Streets Coalition participated in a memorial for Alan Deane.  The Pasadena Star News did a really nice article on the event and on the need for safer streets.

Alan Deane was a much loved member of the Los Angeles and San Gabriel Valley bicycling communities. A talented musician and thoughtful activist, he was also a figure in numerous progressive groups, musicians' groups, and was a regular at KPCC's Crawford Family Forum. Alan was tragically killed by a motor vehicle driver in Pasadena on September 22, 2011 (Alan's 61st birthday) as he was riding to KPCC for an event. The driver was ultimately convicted of reckless driving and was given a mere slap on the wrist for taking Alan away from his friends and family. His death was one of several that motivated the formation of the Pasadena Complete Streets Coalition.
TOD Ordinance and PDA Board Vote on Parklets
A win/loss and a win on issues endorsed by the Complete Streets Coalition

On Monday, September 19, the Pasadena City Council passed a new Transit Oriented Development Ordinance.  The Council voted to support staff's recommendations, which did not include removing minimum parking standards for new developments near transit, for which the Coalition has advocated.  Removing minimum parking standards is considered current best practice in the field, and was just adopted by the City of Oakland.

The work of the Pasadena Complete Streets Coalition did make a difference in improving on the original proposal, which was much more oriented towards parking. The TOD areas have been extended to include an optional additional quarter mile radius, bringing the total radius to 1/2 mile from all Pasadena Metro stations except Sierra Madre.  The Allen Station was originally separated from the central district stations and lumped in with Sierra Madre.  The original proposal had higher minimum parking requirements, and the optional reductions in parking are greater than the original proposal - they just don't go all the way to zero.

And on Wednesday, September 28, the Playhouse District Association (PDA) Board considered the recommendations of the PDA's Parklets Sub-Committee regarding the 24-month Pilot Project.

In short, "Great news!"  The PDA Board has provided a clear and strong endorsement (voting 6:2) for the three components proposed:
  • Road Diet on Colorado Boulevard between Los Robles and Hudson Avenues
  • Physical enhancements to painted bulb-out at El Molino and Oak Knoll intersections
  • Construction and installation of 2 parklets, one outside of Laemmle/Vroman's (Paseo Courtyard), and one at the foot of Arcade Lane
All elements will require the final approval and participation of the City of Pasadena and any subsequent PDA Board review and approval. Next stops:  Design Commission and City Council!

Pasadena Complete Streets Coalition endorses Measure M!
In November, LA County residents will be voting on Measure M to build a 21st-century transportation network of subway, light rail, bus rapid transit, bus and bike lanes into every corner of LA County with the goal of easing traffic congestion by offering people alternatives to drivingMeasure M also provides funding for maintenance of the system and for operations, as well as discounted transit fares.
