A Note from Neil
September always brings with it the start of a new season, a new school year, and a chance to reflect on the past year at Dixon Hall.

On Monday night, we celebrated our 86th Annual General Meeting together with our Board of Directors, members, staff, volunteers, clients, supporters and community members.

Having celebrated last year's accomplishments with the many people who made them possible, we now turn our attention to the future. Over the next few months, we'll be refining our long term plans for Dixon Hall and will share updates and opportunities to get involved with you as they become available.

In the meantime, lots of great things are going on at Dixon Hall - our Music School students are developing their talents every day; we've got a whole new group of enthusiastic students gaining on-the-job training to support them in their new careers; we're busy gearing up for Community Support Month, and we have some wonderful new volunteer opportunities available.
In Partnership,

Neil Hetherington
CEO, Dixon Hall

If you have any questions or comments about Dixon Hall and how to get involved, please feel free to contact me at neil.hetherington@dixonhall.org.
I would love to hear from you.
WSP Annual Golf Tournament
Jessica and Ali are high school students who have been studying classical guitar at our Music School for 4.5 and 5 years respectively.

On Monday, September 12, they performed 'Pavane' by Gabriel Fauré in front of more than 200 guests at WSP's annual charitable golf tournament.

For 13 consecutive years, WSP has been generously supporting Dixon Hall's Music School and other programs. This year, they donated an astounding $55,000.

Both Jessica and Ali said that they had a great time; getting the chance to perform is a wonderful experience for them, and they felt good about helping to showcase the great work that takes place at Dixon Hall.

We are extremely grateful to WSP for their continued support year after year, which helps to ensure that youth have the chance to enjoy and develop their musical talent.

Youth Incubator Program...and We Have Lift-off
Our fourth Incubator term started on Monday, September 12 with 11 brand new students eager and ready to gain hands-on job training experience through our Show Love Café or Mill Centre.

Dixon Hall's Incubator program is an intensive, 2 month program which combines hands-on training with classroom learning for youth who face significant obstacles to finding meaningful employment for a variety of reasons, including a lack of exposure to available opportunities, lack of access to a professional network, and difficulty finding mentors and a solid support system.

With youth unemployment rates hovering around 17% across the city, and double the rate in Regent Park, the need for specialized employment readiness programs for youth has become more important than ever.

Throughout the eight-week Incubator program, each student has the opportunity to participate in workshops that focus on self-discovery and career planning, as well as receive employment support, all within a supportive environment that is catered to their particular needs.

A former Incubator student who is now a manager at one of the world's largest food services organizations, says that she has always wanted to venture into the hospitality sector and that thanks to the program she received the training and exposure she needed to get into the industry.

October is Community Support Month in Ontario
Every year, more than a million Ontarians benefit from community support services - services and support which allow people to heal, live independently and in comfort in their own homes.

Often referred to as the unsung heroes of our health care system, community support service workers provide services like respite care for family caregivers, personal care and home support, meals on wheels, transportation to medical appointments, adult day program coordination and so much more, in order to meet a need identified by Ontarians - the desire to recover from illness and/or age in dignity at home.

Not only do community support service workers improve the quality of life for their clients and their families, their work also generates significant cost-savings for our over-burdened health care system by opening up emergency rooms and hospital beds for the acutely ill.

As Ontarians continue to age and live longer than ever before, the demand for community support services is growing. At Dixon Hall, we strive to meet this growing need, and we could not do it without the help of our donors, funders and volunteers who so generously support this critical work every day.

Throughout the month of October, we'll be recognizing the amazing services provided by support workers in the community every day, and we hope you'll join us!
