PASOs: Step by step

The University of South Carolina recently interviewed members of the PASOs team and Board of Advisors to find out about how PASOs started and how it grew to be what it is now.

Julie Smithwick began laying the groundwork for PASOs as part of a field placement project for her Master’s in Social Work in 2005. Now with its central office and Midlands site based at the Arnold School of Public Health, and offices at 6 other host organizations in various counties, the statewide organization provides education and resource navigation to 8,500 Latinos a year and boasts a budget of $1.3 million.

Volunteer Spotlight: Meet Melissa Aguirre!

Melissa Aguirre is a Bachelor’s in Social Work candidate interning at PASOs. She will graduate from the University of South Carolina at the age of nineteen and she hopes to attend law school next fall and pursue a career in immigration law, eventually working for a non-profit organization. She is a first-generation college student and daughter of two undocumented Mexican immigrants. She has been interning at PASOs since the Spring of 2015 and since this was her first exposure to working with the Latino community, it made her even more certain that she wanted to pursue a career where she was helping the Latino population. She has been volunteering since she was sixteen years old with the Special Olympics and animal shelters. She is the service officer for her sorority and helped organize a gala last year to help fund a total of seven students apply for DACA.
PASOs is a community-based organization whose vision is a healthy South Carolina with a healthy Latino community. PASOs provides education, family support services, organizational capacity building and community leadership development.
