President's Letter

Dear CHMTA members-

What an amazing fall we have to look forward to!

Student recitals, baroque dancers, an artist-in-residence, a master class, lecture-recital, play-a thon, and a competition - wow!  There are plenty of great things for all of us to experience and be inspired by this year.  What better way to keep our students engaged and growing than to offer outstanding learning opportunities?  Please click on our News, Performance, and Calendar links to keep up with dates, deadlines, and events this fall.  http://www.chmta.org/

Following our first student-recital on October 16, renowned dancer, Paige Whitley-Bauguess, will present a program of baroque dance in full costume.   We will all have the chance to see what dance was really like during the time of Johann Sebastian Bach and George Washington.  This should help our students play their Minuets and Gigues!

We are also excited about another new program - The 2016 Master Class Competition and Lecture Recital with Artist-in-Residence Peter Takács, of the Oberlin Conservatory.  On Saturday, November 19, students may audition for a chance to perform in a master class with an esteemed professor from a major conservatory.  Click on our Performance link for general guidelines for the competition.  Details about how to register and participate in this fantastic new event will be coming very soon.  On Sunday November 20, Professor Takács will present a lecture-recital titled, “The Classical Style: Playing Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven on the modern piano.” The master class and lecture-recital will be open to the public.

Our next board meeting, to which all members are invited, will be held on Tuesday, October 18, 2016, in Meeting Room D of the Chapel Hill Public Library.  Please come and share your thoughts with us and help shape the future of your organization!

We remain grateful to the University of North Carolina and University Place for allowing us to provide such outstanding performance opportunities this season.

Yours-
Derison Duarte

A Very Special Co-event!
CHMTA Presents a program of Baroque Dance
presented by Paige Whitley-Bauguess
Sunday October 16th - Person Hall UNC-CH - 4:00 PM (following the CHMTA Fall Student Recital - 2:00 PM)

Dear CHMTA teachers, students, parents and friends:

Please put this exciting world-class musical event on your calendar!

Take this opportunity to learn about --and see performed in costume with masks-- those historical dance forms that much of our piano repertoire is based upon: minuets, bourees, sarabandes, allemandes, gavottes, chaconnes, and more!  These are dances that were popular in Europe in the 1600 and 1700s and even in America during the time of George Washington and inspired numerous composers such as Bach, Handel, Telemann, Corelli,  Scarlatti, Couperin, Rameau, and later classical composers such as Mozart.   Examples of these dances regularly occur in lesson books, too! --written or adapted by contemporary composers.

The performance will take place in beautiful Person Hall on the UNC-CH campus.

This event is open to all without charge.
(Go to www.baroquedance.com for further information.)

CHMTA Play-a-thon 2016: Sat, Dec. 3.
Registration Oct. 15-30

CHMTA music students and teachers will perform music from Bach to Bebop from 11 - 4pm, Saturday December 3 at University Place, Chapel Hill to fund the CHMTA scholarship fund. Your support will aid needy students who want to study a musical instrument. Sponsor a performer for $5 or contribute any amount you feel comfortable. Everything helps!

Flyers and signup forms are on the CHMTA website:

Welcome students, teachers, parents and friends. This year on December 3, 2016, the Chapel Hill Music Teachers Association is sponsoring our fifth annual play-a-thon. It will take place at University Place from 11:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. Ioana Sherman, Playathon Co-Chair, is the guiding force behind this event.

The play-a-thon is a fund raising event to benefit our scholarship and development programs. Students and teachers will be sharing their gifts of time and talent to help others pursue their musical studies in this financially challenging time.

There is a minimum $5.00 participation fee per performer. Participants are encouraged to ask friends, neighbors and family members to sponsor them for any financial amount for each piece they play. I would encourage parents to ask their school if this event qualifies as community service. It should, since CHMTA is a non- profit organization and participants will be practicing, performing and fund raising to help other students with a financial need. The play-a-thon adds another encouraging layer of experience to a student’s education. In short, they learn to use their abilities to pay it forward.

In support of our event, Maus Piano is generously donating a Kawai grand piano for our performers to play on. Participants will have the opportunity to play on a wonderful instrument. Such a fitting way to showcase our participant’s performances.

I look forward to meeting you at the play-a-thon. I will also be playing and soliciting sponsors. Please help us fill University Mall with the gift of music.

Very sincerely,

Derison Duarte,

President CHMTA

Please contact Ioana with questions regarding this event: ioanasherman@gmail.com

Our fifth annual CHMTA Play-a-Thon will take place at the University Place on Saturday, December 3, 2016 from 11 am to 4 pm.

In this event, students seek sponsorships in the form of cash pledges from family, friends and neighbors and perform at the mall.  The CHMTA deeply appreciates your encouragement, enthusiasm and, above all, your participation in this very important event. We encourage all teachers to participate in order to share in this opportunity to raise money for our scholarships and other beneficial student programs.

Please supply each of your students with a Pledge Form to solicit sponsor donations.  All donations will be accepted at the Registration Desk at the mall. Students are to arrive at least 20 minutes before their assigned time. This will allow sufficient time to check in (which involves finding their names in the teacher’s studio list, and paying the pledge amount). It’s helpful if parents write a check for the total amount of cash pledges collected, but cash will also be accepted.

PLEASE STRESS TO YOUR STUDENTS THAT THEY MUST BRING THEIR PLEDGE FORMS AND DONATIONS RECEIVED TO THE MALL ALONG WITH THEIR MUSIC. Teachers are encouraged to collect the pledges before the 15th and bring them to the event.

All performances at the mall will be in studio recital fashion.

Teachers should be present at the time their students are performing.

Thank you for your participation and support! We hope you and your students have a wonderful experience.

Warm Regards,
