The Ohio Turnpike - A Better Way To Travel®

E-ZPass customers saved over $300 million in 7 years

At the stroke of midnight on Oct. 1, 2009, our current toll collection system was switched on, ushering in the era of E-ZPass on the Ohio Turnpike.

Our valued customers save both time and money using E-ZPass. In fact, the average savings on tolls is 33 percent and customers can save up to 50 percent on a single trip.

Since E-ZPass began on the Ohio Turnpike, customers have saved more than $300 million. While our current system is working well and is not yet obsolete, the lifespan of such systems is 8-12 years. That's why it's essential that we begin planning for the future of our toll collections system.

Many thanks to the more than 9,000 customers who took our toll collection and customer service system survey last month. Look for a report on the findings in future editions of Customer Connection.

Ohio Turnpike hosts Open Houses for the Public

Have you or your children ever climbed inside a piece of heavy roadway equipment? Now’s your chance to do that and more on Saturday, Oct. 22 from 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

The public is invited to join Ohio Turnpike Maintenance Crews and their families to get an insider’s look at turnpike facilities and see our heavy roadway equipment up close. You’ll have a chance to discuss Turnpike operations with staff and get all of your questions answered.

In addition, Ohio State Highway Patrol Troopers and Disabled Vehicle Service Operators will be on hand to describe their daily lives on the 241-mile roadway. Light refreshments and beverages will be provided and each child will receive a kid’s hard hat and the opportunity to take a photo at a selfie station.

The Open Houses take place at each of the Ohio Turnpike's eight Maintenance Buildings along the 241-mile Mainline. Click here for more information and a list of addresses.

Eastbound George V. Voinovich Bridge opens to traffic

Governor John R. Kasich’s Jobs and Transportation Plan is working out exactly as planned, according to Ohio Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission Chairman Jerry N. Hruby.

"The new George V. Voinovich Bridge in Cleveland is “Exhibit A” in the Governor’s plan to use Ohio Turnpike revenue bond financing to help fund transportation projects along the Turnpike corridor," said Chairman Hruby.

Thus far, the Commission has reimbursed the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) nearly $256 million dollars to pay for this $273 million project.

This new bridge and its twin are vital links in northeast Ohio’s transportation network and will connect major destinations and employment centers to the Ohio Turnpike via I-71 and I-90.

New #677 hotline number is activated for Turnpike trouble

The Ohio Turnpike recently switched its use of motorist hotline numbers from *990 to #677. The change makes the use of #677 consistent statewide.

Consistency will benefit motorists and the agencies that support them, including the Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP), the Ohio Turnpike and local law enforcement jurisdictions in 70 communities through which the turnpike passes.

Calls will be directly routed to Highway Patrol dispatch centers in Sandusky, Cleveland and Warren. Meanwhile, the OSHP encourages drivers to call the #677 hotline when they need roadside assistance and to report aggressive and drunk drivers or drug activity.

“We encourage Turnpike drivers to use #677 to report an emergency or a disabled vehicle,” said Staff Lt. William Weirtz, OSHP Turnpike Liaison.  “They can also do their part to contribute to a safer Ohio by reporting any suspected activity involving alcohol, drugs or any suspicious activities,” he added.

Mickey Mart stores now offer E-ZPass in seven counties

The Ohio Turnpike continues to expand its E-ZPass® partnerships with retailers. Mickey Mart Convenience Stores now offer E-ZPass transponders at 15 northern Ohio stores throughout seven counties.

“In a continued effort to be responsive to our customers, we are making it easier than ever to acquire an E-ZPass transponder by adding Mickey Mart as a retail partner,” said Ohio Turnpike Executive Director Randy Cole. “Mickey Mart helps us reach parts of northern Ohio that we did not previously reach. We’re very happy to partner with them.”

“Offering E-ZPass is one additional way to add convenience and value for our customers, said Mickey Mart Vice President Jason Appel. "We’re looking forward to our partnership with the Ohio Turnpike.”

VIDEO: Ohio History Barn commemorates Turnpike past

One year ago, the Ohio Turnpike and the Ohio History Connection commemorated the 60th Anniversary of the Ohio Turnpike--as well as Ohio history--with a twist on barn painting from the days of Ohio's 200th Anniversary.

Scott Hagan, the barn artist who painted one barn in each of Ohio's 88 counties with the Ohio bicentennial logo, brought Ohio history back to life once more with a historical barn painting in Sandusky County. The history barn, which is highly visible from the Ohio Turnpike near Exit 91, features Ohio's 19th president, Rutherford B. Hayes.

The Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center in Fremont is the nation's very first presidential library. It opened on May 30, 1916. See the center's new website and plan a visit during its centennial anniversary.

The bold enterprises are the successful ones.”-- President Rutherford B. Hayes

The 1955 truss arch bridge carrying I-90 traffic over the Cuyahoga River gets demolished by ODOT in 2013 to make way for the eastbound George V. Voinovich Bridge.
